Sandra@...

Hi.  It's Sandra.  Staring Monday, Yahogroups will pretty much close shop.  I'll be able to send an e-mail to the members, but I think only that.

yahoogroups closing

This should be post #78,621 and it's coming (it's going) at a bad time for me, so I don't have much time to save much (or anything).  The good thing is that I have, over the past 18 years, saved LOTS of good parts from this group, and added them to topic pages on my website.

Gradually, I will need to delete links back to this group, where I have provided them for people to read the whole discussion.  I think my site is already too big for anyone to read, so that's fine.  No one has ever needed ALL the topics.

We could move new posts to a different host site.  Has anyone here used https://groups.io ?

Does anyone know of other options?

One possibililty would be to quietly let this slip away, with more dignity than whining.  (I am writing to my own self, there.)

If this is easier to discuss on facebook, for anyone, here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/755519507972056/permalink/1229863523870983/

In case I don't get back in here before I can't post directly anymore, thank you all for being here, and special thanks to all who ever helped keep the group alive and lively—writers, moderators, and admins.  This group and the little Always Learning Live conferences that sprang from it were a solid, happy, part of my life.  Solidity is dissolving, now, as it sometimes does.  Ice to water to vapor.  The benefits are still out here, in thoughts and minds and lives.

I haven't been active in this group, although I did intend to be. I have though benefited tremendously from reading posts here, emails, and especially your website. Thank you for all you do and have done.. 💖 Sorry to see this taken down

I so appreciated this group and all the gifts of wisdom given all these years. For someone not on Facebook, it was nice it was kept as long as it was.
Thank you!!

Sad to see this treasured resource come to an end, but so grateful that it ever existed in the first place. I’m also very grateful that so much of the fabulous gathered wisdom from here can be accessed from your website, Sandra. Thank you for all the hard work that you, and other regular contributors, have done, and continue to do, for unschooling families.

I'm glad to have found this group. My daughter graduates next week. She's been happily unschooled for several years now. I'm thankful for this group's help in letting go. I now have an adult daughter I'm proud of. Best wishes to all of you...

Hi Sandra,
I just started archiving things off of my other groups. Is there anything that I can do to help?

I feel like your archives are really important. Thank you for all of the work that you have done through the years.

“ The benefits are still out here, in thoughts and minds and lives.”

Completely and utterly tangibly - our family is transformed forever. And there has been a gentle ripple effect to many other families. I get told i am ‘inspiring’ by quite a few friends these days  - slightly embarrassingly - and it’s this group i am drawing from, every time.

Huge thanks from my family and the wider world..

But even the acceptance that everything moves on, all is transient, changing, is beautiful too.

-=-It will still be an email list but will be 100% private and with no saved content like archives files and photos. -=-

Lots of people read and write directly at yahoogroups, and don't use e-mail anymore, so "still" isn't applicable to everyone.   The format of the e-mails has degraded over the past year or two.  The headers and who it's from are not as clear as they used to be, at all.

Without an archive, it's not a good use of time and energy, for me.

Thanks for the link to more info, though.

This has landed in my inbox at quite a poignant time; my eldest two have chosen to opt into high school in the last six weeks - unschooled until 12 and 14; they researched the schools and have taken the whole thing in their stride.  My eldest was put into the highest sets across the board and is holding her own comfortably; the youngest has already shown compassion and wisdom beyond her years excelling not just academically but socially - an email from her head of house communicating her 'remarkable transition'.  The integrity and confidence with which they turned up to a school of 1800 students (at different times) knowing no-one at a time which was absolutely right for them is absolute confirmation of the power of unschooling.  For those of you who are not so far into your journey; I can wholeheartedly say..have faith, stick in there; this group, everything Sandra lives by is true.  As so many others have said; our family our children are indebted to your wisdom and generosity of time and words over the years.  ice..water..vapour...wow!  xx

I do believe this group has had a profound impact on me and, therefore, and more important, my entire family. I feel so incredibly blessed to have stumbled onto it when my fourteen year old was only two and a half. It has really changed me, and surely made me a better mother and subsequently made my life better too. I don't like to think how life may have turned out had I not discovered, and especially been able to absorb, the principles all of the wonderful families on this group have so generously imparted to us all. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

Wow, how sad! This group was such a huge part of our lives too. I never really caught up properly with the jump to Facebook 😊, not the way I followed every thread on here.
Sandra, Joyce, Brie, Meredith, Alex, Karen...you and everyone else sure changed mine and my children’s lives.
You sure made me switch gears many times, gave us answers, insight, guidance....

They did learn to read, just as you said 😊
And they’re pretty big now. But my youngest is still pretty small.

A huge thank you.
For this group
For your input, time and energy, which can only Really be accurately described as Love.
For helping so many families.
For being there through all the tough and confusing times.
The End of an Era!
How sad. And yet all things end don’t they.

Big special-est thanks to Sandra, you did and do so much.
I’ll ever be grateful for the effects of your dedication, determination and energy on our lives ♥️
Thank You, heartfelt Thank You 🙏 xxx

Most of groups I know are migrating to groups.io.  My understanding is that it will work similarly to current google or yahoo. Also can bring over files and pictures.
I am not a  techie at all. My understanding is that the free platform is limited to 1000 members.  And 1 gig storage?

Premium is $110 perhaps just for setup. Perhaps annually. We are soliciting donations from our 2500+ plus members in one longstanding group. There are many people who won't use Facebook so we are committed to keeping email group going.

I do hate to lose all the wonderful
I would hate to lose all the wonderful Always Learning content but I am particularly resistant to change.

Hi.  It's Sandra.  Staring Monday, Yahogroups will pretty much close shop.  I'll be able to send an e-mail to the members, but I think only that.

In case I don't get back in here before I can't post directly anymore, thank you all for being here, and special thanks to all who ever helped keep the group alive and lively—writers, moderators, and admins.  This group and the little Always Learning Live conferences that sprang from it were a solid, happy, part of my life.  Solidity is dissolving, now, as it sometimes does.  Ice to water to vapor.  The benefits are still out here, in thoughts and minds and lives.

Vicki, I don't like change either. :-)

We can afford $110 a year, so I'm not worried about that.   If anyone has a story of a group moving to groups.io, please tell it.  What went easily?  What might not be smooth?

If it can be moved to groups.io, that's a good idea.  There's a lot going on for me this month, and my computer is in the shop for a few more days, but it IS possible that this group can not only continue, but be revived in a better environment.  Maybe.  It's possible.

Thank you for all the kind words about the group, aboutt me and other writers present and past.  I hope we can keep going.

Dear Sandra,

I've listened in here for years, following along and learning so much. Thank you for changing the world, one family at a time.

Let's keep it going! It has been a long time since I have posted, but this group and Sandra's advice made a work of difference for me when my son was younger. The information I gained here changed our lives.

Sandra,
We are in the process of moving our group over. I am just starting to get up to speed because I have been downloading all of our files from the group website so that we have them archived somewhere.

There is a help group that actually answers questions. You can send out mass invitations to your Yahoo group members and it is easy to just click a link to accept membership.

Our method was to invite all of the moderators first and make them moderators and then start inviting members. There is some numerical limit of the number of invitations, but I am not sure what that is since I have been handing the archiving.

So far, we are happy with how the groups io works. I will update you if I find out more.

I hope we can keep going too and make it an active group again if we do..
I feel happier here than Facebook I don’t know why, it just feels more personal!
Like speaking directly to people in a small huddle, rather than shouting to a huge audience!
I know realistically that isn’t true, but it’s the difference in vibe the 2 formats give me 😊

It would be wonderful if the group could continue its existence on a similar platform as I find a list format more conducive to the deep, reflective type of discussions we have here than Facebook where posts and their ramifications can easily be missed.

Being able to save the archive would be so helpful. I don't know how many people still do that, but I still do searches with key-words in here, from time to time.

Thank you everyone, and especially you Sandra, for all the time, dedication, clarity and integrity you've put in it from the start.

I'm so glad I was able to be part of the group for a short time while it was still active... I benefitted immensely from the archives. I hope they can be saved, even if fewer people access them. Your commitment and generosity are inspiring, Sandra. Thank you.

Wow—I'm just seeing this notification.

THANK YOU, SANDRA!! for your many years of hosting a discussion that was SO helpful to so many, and that stayed on topic. How rare and useful that is—a true gift to readers. What a blessing you, and it, have been in my family's life for the past decade. Even though it's been quiet here in recent years, with Facebook becoming the go-to forum for so many discussions these days (and you are continuing your generosity there), losing this resource feels big to me—and I didn't even post all that often. And our children are grown (the youngest is 17 and dual-enrolled at community college...no longer an unschooler!). Sigh. I still will miss this. It felt so safe—private and useful.

Thank you also to the many wise, regular contributors—I learned so much from you all. Most importantly, I learned how to breathe and relax into the rhythm and connection that defines the learning life of unschooling.

Thank you again to all, and blessing to everyone on your unschooling/post-unschooling journeys...wherever life is leading you. ❤️

-=- It felt so safe—private and useful.-=-

It was never private until a few years ago when Yahoo rearranged everything, and I went into the "back stage area" and accidentally bumped into a switch I couldn't switch back.

The archives were public before then, and many discussions are linked on my page.  It's a hardship that they weren't available again after The Change. :-)

All those links will need to be deleted or changed anyway; only members can get there right now, and in December when Yahoo flushed the archives, the links won't go anywhere, I guess.

I think it was still safe, though, and is still safe, because it was on topic, and moderated, and philosophical.  I would love to continue that way in our new home, if we can.

Thanks for all the other kind words, Leah, and others.

*And* we are still standing on a solid ball of rock and dirt, with a nice gooey warm magma filling and iron solid core, with all kinds of wonderful tangible things living and growing and shifting and being on it. On it, in it, with it. :)
