Hi all,

I used this forum a while ago to gather data for the 'reading age in unschooled children' graph. I think that graph has been useful and helped a lot of people relax. The graph is here: http://sandradodd.com/readingage.html

I'd like to update that graph while this forum is still going, and I'm hoping I'll get more data, and some kids who weren't reading then are now, so I can add them to the graph.

To make life easier and make the group less cluttered with responses, I've made a Google sheet you can enter your own data.

As per last time, please only fill it in if your child is always unschooled (never been 'taught' to read), and the age should be the age they could read most anything they wanted without much trouble.

Here is the link - my first time using Google docs - let me know if anything is amiss! Ifilled in Kai's data as an example at the top.

Sheet1 Name( optional), Age at independent reading Kai Goodman, 9, Note 1: Age at reading should be the age at which your child could read pretty much anything they wanted without too much effort Note 2: Please only fill in if your child has been always unschooled

Thanks, Jo

We should only fill this out if we didn’t submit data the first time, right?

I'd like to get all the data again, just to make sure I get the largest sample size again - so even if you sent me data last time, it'd be great if you could still put the ages in this new spreadsheet so i've got it all together :)
Thanks!

Sandra, there is a second dot in your link to the graph so it goes to your error page.

Hello Jo,

I'm not sure if this is even relevant to your study, but thought I might share. Another interesting aspect of reading is whether kids come to love it, become voracious. I'm not suggesting we privilege that as better than not loving to read, just that it differs among children (and people of all ages).

Both of my kids shifted from capable to enthusiastic (and in the case of my daughter near obsessive) readers about two years after they became able to read most anything they wanted.

Thanks for the work you're doing on this!

Warmly,
Tori

Hi Jo, I've added Evie in as she has always been unschooled (unlike Abby).  I hope it worked
