Dola Dasgupta

Hi,

My eight-year-old is into Minecraft and has been asking me to get him Mods. I need to know how does one get Mods.

Are they free downloads?
How can one get downloads for iMac?
Any links from where I can get them?

I am a bit slow in grasping video games online myself and I live in India. I try and help my son by asking around other parents.  So if someone gives me step by step guide I can do them for him. So far this is how I have been supporting him.

Hi Dola,

I haven't done this myself so I asked my 8yo who installs a lot of mods with his Dad.
This is what my son told me when I asked him your questions:

Mods are free & go to 9minecraft.net
You need to install the latest version of Forge 1.7.2 (under the subheading Mods & Tools)
Choose your mods & download
On your Mac go to Finder - Library-Application Support- Minecraft & create a Mods folder (apparently file names in here need to be lower case too) & you drag your mods into there.

Installing Forge & the mods is a bit more complicated apparently and he said there are heaps of youtube videos on how to do it. Here are a couple of links for Mac:

Hope that helps or at least gets you started!

thanks,

Niki

There is an easy way which is to download the free Technic Launcher for Mac, and then browse and install modpacks from there.

We really struggled with getting mods to work until we discovered mod packs. These are easy to install packs, usually with several different mods in. The one I’ve used is Kovacik’s mod pack, and a google search should find the webpage. (Although I’m on PC, so no idea if it works for mac?)

The other thing with mods is to be really careful when clicking the download links, as the pages they are hosted on have lots of ‘click to download’ fake links. So take your time, and make sure you’re clicking on the right link!

You can also find step by step instructional videos by searching for it in YouTube. I find it helpful to see how it is done as well as written instruction. :) Good luck.

I've installed lots of mods, and the number one thing you have to be careful of is to get mods that work with the version of Minecraft you are running. My boys run 1.6.4 because they like it more than the newer versions for some reason, so check your version before you begin modding.

Also, be aware that whenever you download anything Minecraft related, it comes through an ad.fly server and you have to WAIT for the SKIP AD button to appear, or you will be downloading junk. Once you hit SKIP AD, you will see the file you want start to download.

Once you install Forge for your version of Minecraft, you will have the ability to install as many mods for that version as you like. You should be aware that some mods have bugs, however, and some mods are incompatible with others.

The easy way to make sure you don't blow up what you have is to install Forge, then 1 mod, then test (just try to play the game). If that works, install a 2nd mod if you want, then test. And so forth. If you encounter a problem, you can always just delete the last mod you installed.

You should also back up everything that is working from time to time because some bugs can take awhile to appear. For example, in one mod it is possible to play but if you set off too much TNT, it will cause a chain reaction that eats all your computer memory and everything will crash.
