Sandra Dodd

I started a page, but it's not much yet. Soon, maybe.
http://sandradodd.com/learnnothingday
I'm finally getting the hang of naming webpages.

I listed Melissa as Italian coordinator because she translated it.
Can anyone else translate "Learn Nothing Day" or "First International
Learn Nothing Day"? I need more high-falutin' titles for people. <g>

Kirby asked me yesterday if I wanted to do something on my birthday,
when he's in town, in addition to the joint birthday party we're
having on the 26th. I said "I can't." He was quiet on the other end
of the phone at first. "Why not?"
"Because it's Learn Nothing Day." He understands. We'll probably
do something anyway. <g>

I'll talk to Holly about helping me make a little logo so people can
link to that page from other places. How exciting, the idea of a day
to take a total, fullout break from learning! *FINALLY*--recess.

I figured Sylvie Martin would do French, but she might be very busy
these days with her book out and it summer (her family rents yurts
out). Sure! Any language any of you know. Thanks!

OK let's see if Sylvie and Jeanine wish to do it...

If you people keep translating it into all these other languages, I
am going to be accidentally learning stuff just by reading what day
it is!

French:
Première journée internationale sans apprentissage

German:
Erster Internationaler Welt-nichtslerntag

Just for fun:
Mandarin Chinese (I hope you can read the characters, I wrote it in
phonetics next to it just in case.)
第一国际无会日 (di yi guo ji wu xue ri)
(not 100 % sure this would sound great to a native ;-)

(I could come up with a Dutch version too, if need be :-)

Oh, that really is too funny :0)

I had a friend who used to answer this way, in response to the famous,
'Do you do schoolwork in the holidays?"

"Oh No! We absolutely *insist* the children must not learn *anything*
in the holidays!"

Holy cow. I was hoping for a translation of just the phrase.

Sylvie and Jeanine translated the whole page:

"Void in Utah" gave them trouble. Does anyone know how that would be
said in French? I think it's an idiom they didn't understand.
"With Jeanine, we had difficulties for the word : VOID. I think we
understood.. is it like "Day off" ? If yes, it's "jour fri" in
french."
Sylvie, it's like that day is not allowable, or is not applicable, or
is cancelled out in Utah for the 24th. (It's because they have a big
state holiday that day, Pioneer Day, and it's all about celebrating
the history of Utah.)
Anne, can you advise, please?
I can make a page of it in French, too.

Programme prliminaire
pour la premire clbration internationale de

 LA JOURNEE SANS RIEN APPRENDRE

Learn Nothing Day

Whooo that is a tricky one ;-)

I would offer "pont" but not entirely sure, as it is in French the meaning of a day off that allows
to connect with the pending week end.
Otherwise I dunno.

So is the date official ?
Can we make it in France the same ?

I hope so!!

You'll be many hours ahead of me.

I made a count-down calendar, but I put it to days, and even still...
it will be half over in half the world by the time it gets to my
house, so I don't know how to "be fair" and accurate on that one.

Does anyone know of an international count-down calendar? <g>
I guess if someone puts that script up in France, it will change over
on the midnight that it should? I don't even know if it will work
here. My website lives.... where do yahoo sites live? <bwg>

Well that just gives you a TWO day vacation, and then the weekend, so
what if you took four days in a row off from learning? You could
write a long article on how that goes. <g> Do you have a blog? We
could all read it! (starting the 25th, of course, because I don't
know about the rest of you, but I just can't read a blog without
learning something)

Sandra

wisdomalways5

in that case I am in BIG trouble- I can not learn nothing for 4
whole days- I could not turn on the computer or tv or read or oh no
I can not even discuss things with the kids not sure I can watch
them play without learning something- and hummm no hanging out with
other people because I might learn something about them. no shopping-
no parade watching- no BBQ"S- no reading blogs- no THINKING- yep I
am not going to be able to pull this off- what happens IF we do end
up learning something? lol

I would write: "La Journée Sans Rien Apprendre" sera célébrée le 25
juillet dans l'Utah (les citoyens de l'Utah sauront pourquoi.)

or maybe

...sera exceptionellement célébrée le 25 juillet dans l'Utah...

or something like that

Bea
ps: I like "sans rien apprendre"! I was thinking it could be
translated "la journée où on apprend rien" but that sounded kind of
awkward... It's not easy translating "learn nothing day" in another
language. lol (that might make it hard to learn nothing for people
who speak several languages... what if they start thinking about how
to translate the name of the holiday? lol)

emmy

.. what if they start thinking about how
to translate the name of the holiday?

maybe a disclaimer should state that: please note while reading about
learn nothing day (on that day) this website is NOT responsible if
learning should occur.

I figure I'll get at least two webpages out of it: one of outsiders
complaining, and one of people writing "We tried not to learn, but
then..."

I'm kinda counting on it.

Holly and I are working on art for the happenin'. I hope to have a
logo and links for people to put on their blogs or pages in a day or
two. If I work really hard for the next four weeks, maybe I'll be
too tired to learn on the 24th. But Kirby's coming home for a visit
starting the 23rd, so I'm pretty much doomed.

Wow. Thank you! Thanks to all who've sent things today. I was out

evening. I'm very tired, but will try to catch up with e-mail

Sorry to get behind. I'm sorry to those who posted and whose posts

July 24, right? Well, there is no way I can learn *nothing* then,
although some people might disagree. I'll be immersed in ComiCon from
the evening of the 23rd through the 27th, surrounded by comics, video
games, sci-fi television and movie mania, wacky people in and out of
costume, fully drenched in pop culture. How can I not learn in that
environment???

But you won't be learning anything real.

It won't be important learning that you can use in the real world.

It will be just for fun.

Maybe I will sleep all day. That will keep me from learning anything. My

Probably not though.

Not for us - we (all 3 of us - Ed, Zac, Lisa) take horseback riding lessons on TH. Even if I ask the instructor not to teach us anything "new" we'd still be learning something. And we're looking at woodcarving lessons for Zac (stimulated by our discussions about strewing for teens) and of course the only ones we've found so far are only offered on TH too.
