sheesh. No offense intended.
I've almost been killed on my bike by many drivers down here and the fact
that they don't know how to use the freeway makes me extremely frustrated
with southern drivers. Having lived in several areas, I can honestly say that
the drivers are worse in this area.
It wasn't meant to reflect on you, nor on people that don't want to live in
the big city.
A person should know how to drive on freeways if they're going to use them.
Idiots don't belong on the road, they'll kill you.

Sorry, bad reaction on my part, shouldn't have been so offensive. :( I
miss home.

"Sorry, bad reaction on my part"

Don't apologize...I felt bad for over generalizing.
There just seems to be a monopoly on bad driving here and I'm a bit
cynical as of late. Dh was hit on his bike, hit and run situation. He
didn't get the license number since he's near sighted...really sucks.
Thankfully he wasn't hurt and his bike got hit on the pedal which
probably damaged the car more than his bike.
We regularly get cut off by drivers, stuck behind people that don't
know how to merge and read bumper stickers that say "Time to Kick
some Ass" with a big American flag on it.
(I suppose there are other lamo's in other cities with those )
And then there is the confederate flag thing.....I see enough of
those in windows of cars to make me ill.
I really do understand the pride in region thing, but that old
confederate flag seems to imply a hell-uva-lot more down here, YK?

Anyway, sorry to upset ya! I love a lot of things about the South.
And if you're homesick, come on down. Pensacola isn't far from Mobile
and there are fab beaches to hang at.

I don't see Time to Kick some Ass stuff or confederate flags.

New Mexico must not have ANY good stuff. Except that smell of roasting green
chile and then a summer rain, like we had yesterday, coming down while
there's bread in the oven, like there was at my house yesterday.

EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT WITHOUT GREEN CHILE!

I'm lucky to love living where I live. I realize it's partly luck, and
partly whining and being stubborn about offers to move.

On my car is a sticker that says "If it absolutely, positively, has to be
destroyed overnight...." and then there is a big Marine Corps emblem. (a take
off on that old UPS commercial.) Put there by my dh and df who are both
(were) Marines, and who both have that annoying Kick Ass attitude sometimes.

That's funny!
I like that one.

Does it look like that one?
If not there's more than one design out there.
When I went to google, though, just glancing showed it's pretty popular and
some people were saying they loved it, or it was their favorite ever.

Oh thanks, rub it in then!! Hmmmmphf...
I really, really liked the parts of New Mexico we saw while on a road trip
four years ago. But the main problem is lots and lots of beach without the
acompanying OCEAN! lol
We mainly moved here for the beaches and the weather.
If it weren't for that, we'd be living elsewhere.
Pensacola is a pretty cool town, it's just when you start getting away from
the downtown area it gets more and more Southern (in a redneck kinda way) and
less and less eclectic and artsy and interesting.
So we live in town and research other areas of the world, and talk to all of
you to keep sane!! :)
I'm finding some cool people here in the South though, really.

Yep! Ours looks just like that, except it is in blue instead of black and I
*think* the emblem is to the right as opposed to the left. <g>

Hi Ren,
We used to love and camp at Big Lagoon State Park and my all time favorite,
can't be beat beach in my opinion, is at Perdido Key, the second part coming
from the "FloraBama".

I wish whining and being stubborn worked in my situation. We just have to
decide to do something entirely different to make money if we move out of
this area. DH isn't willing.

Not all that is "redneck" (sunburned back of the
neck...farming) is uninteresting and non-artsy. Have
you looked at the Foxfire books? listened to
blue-grass music? done any contra or square or clog
dancing? made a basket, woven a coverlet, stitched a
rag doll, made a truck garden, built a house from
scratch from the materials on your land, midwifed,
harvested your own gensing, made your own shine (for
all sorts of uses), sawed your own lumber, made split
shakes for roofs, divined for water, hunted
alligators, coons, and everything else, had all of the
same for pets, and on and on.....if you can get around
the bad ideas, lots of "rednecks" have good hearts and
some good ideas, too. And lots of really good stories
to tell. Some of the stories are even true.

WOVEN?
There's anyone weaving in the SE?

I figured quilting out of already-made cloth, fine; crocheting afghans, okay.

But really, weaving?

Doesn't the confederate flag stand for a desire for more state rights
as opposed to big federal gov't?

I have the entire set.
Don't have any problem with down home or country folk. Redneck to me is more
than just that......whether it originally meant that or not.
It's the guys and gals with noisy trucks that have confederate flags in their
window and say rude things about how blacks and whites shouldn't marry.
Or shirts that say incredibly horrible things like "100% cotton, handpicked
by yo Momma"
No, redneckishness down here implies a whole lot more than just simple
country folk.
I have good friends that are that.
But I can't tolerate biggotry or the unwillingness to be kind to anyone from
a different culture, religion or sexual preference.

It should.
It does for some people.
But for many it's a very in your face way to say "we hate yankees, blacks and
anyone that doesn't belong in the South" (which is anyone not of their
liking).

I remember being in the line at the grocery store when we first moved to
Houston and saw a couple (one Caucasian, the other African American) walk
into the store and I was waiting to here a comment, see a look,
something........but no one even blinked an eye at them.
That's how I know Houston IS NOT the South. And it is one of the only
things I like about this place. When you grow up in an area and live there
all your life you think certain things are just "normal" or you know they
aren't right but you're not sure how to respond to those not so "tolerant"
individuals. Am I making any sense. If you've ever grown up in what I call
an "undercurrent" maybe this makes sense.

Maybe to a few but in West Virginia, most of those who sport them on their
vehicle of flying above their front door are not that concerned about
politics.
The nazi swastika was originally a native american symbol, would it make it
okay today to fly a flag like that?

I agree with Ren that there is a huge difference between "country" and
"redneck" one can be country with out being a redneck just as one can be a
redneck and live in a city (even way up north here!)

The same shape symbol may have been used in Native American art, but it also
dates back to the Byzantine empire, as does the double-headed eagle, another
symbol Germany adopted. You can see swastikas woven into liturgical
garments from 1,000 years ago.

I doubt that they are still worn today, or woven into new fabrics.

Might be time to reclaim it.
The Swastika is way older than the nazi's. It can be found in
sumerian documents form 4000 years ago, in India adorning the
temples. The nazi's pinched it. I used to know why but can't
remeber right this second.
