Good luck.

I started an online unschooling support group here in SC because I figured my
friend, Melinda, and I just COULDN'T be the only two in SC. I was right. So
far in a year we have 38 members and are growing monthly.

I had the brainstorm to host a conference because 1) I want the unschoolers
around here to know there are others out here like them, 2) I want potential
unschoolers to realize they CAN do it, 3) I like the torture;-), 4) I love a
good party! and 5) I'm DYING to meet these people in real life! <BWG> {{
for #5, it probably would've been cheaper and easier to get in my car and
drive!}}

Mississippi really isn't THAT far! A good day's drive. Think about it. And if
your husband isn't a social butterfly, there'll be plenty of just sitting
around listening he can do---plus lots of fun activities he'd enjoy. If he
warms up enough to talk, there will be several dads willing to chat.

Why don't you start an online unschoolers group in MS? And if you want to
host a conference, I'll walk you through it and hold your hand! <g>

Again, good luck!

Thanks for the info, but I was really hoping for something a little closer
to home. Is anyone near Columbus, Mississippi? Also, my husband is
extremely shy with people he doesn't know (outside of his job, that is), so
I can't even imagine him "openly discussing his fears with other dads who've
been there, done that." But he would be willing to listen to them discuss
things. He would probably just sit/stand there and listen to the
discussions. But then again, some people have actually been known to coax
him out of his shell when they first meet (I managed to:-).

As unschooling conferences go, that's as close as it has ever been to
Mississippi, and might be as close as it ever gets. You should seriously
consider going, with or without your husband.

I'll think about it. ;-) I don't know if I am ready for that yet.

Kelly,
Can you tell me if there will be (planned) kids activities? I'm thinking
about bringing my 12yo (13 in Oct) son. I don't think he would like to sit
in on workshops and such. I did see the hotel has a pool and workout room
but there weren't any mention of kid workshops. Thanks for any info you can
give me so we can decide.

Sandra did you say your children may come? Ds is into magic cards and
video games like Final Fantasy and such. This could be quite the get away
for the two of us. Unfortunately dh is usually too busy with work and too
introverted to join in the fun.

TIA

Hi Suzanna

I'm not sure where in Mississippi Columbus is.. guess i should pull out my
map! I'm in Gulfport and so far have had NO luck getting anyone together
down here. I KNOW there are other homeschoolers but they arent very
sociable. :( I'm in the planning stages of a Gulf Coast area support group
so we'll have to wait and see if I can pull anyone out of the woods :)

Yes, there will. I have a 14 year old son; he's helping plan. I'm hoping to
have the "funshops" posted on the website by the end of May. (People are slow
to get their contracts in. Plus we're looking at more and more.) Funshops and
activities will not be restricted by age, but there will be things that may
be more appropriate for some ages than others.

Keep checking the website. Funshops and activities will be posted as they
come in. If you have any great ideas, please holler!

There's a game shop nearby. I might be able to get them involved if I know
there will be enough interest.

Barb,
We are attending...probably without my dh, but I'm still working on that. I
have a 12 y.o. ds that is very into gaming also. On another list we
discovered there will be a few gamers there. They should have plenty of kids
to hang with and meet.
I've been told the conference is very kid friendly and there will be things
for them to do.

I have two boys that would be very interested...ages 9 and 12 by the
conference date.

Thanks Kelly. :-) This even intrigues my 16yo ds who doesn't like
homeschoolers. LOL! So I'll keep checking back to the website. He may change
his mind and go with us.<G> TIA for all your hard work to get this together.
I had a friend that put one on here. It was great but she lost her shirt and
a friendship of someone else in the precess. :-( Sandra you were great! I
was so new to all this at the time. LOL!

Cameron hasn't met a homeschooler he likes yet! I keep telling him that
they're out there! Maybe they'll get along!

Ren,
Thanks for the reply. Dh isn't a group kinda person and his business is
really hoppin' that time of year. I wish he could come and talk to some
other unschooling Dads. He doesn't bother me to much about what we do or are
not doing, so I am greatful. He's just a quite kinda guy. Hope your dh can
make it with you. <G>

Kelly,
Sorry. I'm sure you will do great! I think it had more to do with one of
them moving out of state, disagreemnts, and that kinda thing. They recovered
pretty quickly. Chris would love to do it again. <G> Now she's really
involved with her kids, having a teenager and three more coming up very
quickly. Theatre is very consuming in their life. <G>

Barb E Sorry again. I'm sure of two of us. <BWEG>
