I looked at the weather and it is calling for showers, but it looks
like it will be fairly warm.
Anyway, if it's pouring down, we could meet inside the Natural
History museum in the lobby.
Hopefully the weather man is wrong!
See you tomorrow!

Sorry to say we won't be able to make the DC trip. It is just too
difficult without a car. I hope you all have a great day!

The Cherry Blossoms WERE beautiful!!
A big wind came and blew the petals all around, like sweet smelling snow.
We then went to the IMAX theater, some to see the T-Rex movie in 3D, some to
see a show about the Serengeti. Great time was had!
Hope to see more next time.

Well, after subscribing recently and getting to know a bit about you
guys, I intended to head downtown today and meet you all. We got there,
though much later than 11:00. What was I thinking that I could find a
group of people I don't know during Cherry Blossom season?! :) We had a
good time anyway - ate lunch on the grass, walked through the Africa
exhibit, debated seeing T-Rex, but a kid needed to be back for Power
Tumbling practice. While I'm at it, I'll introduce myself, belatedly.
I live in Burke and have 4 kids and WAY too many pets. I have boys 12
and 9, and girls 10 and 7. We took everybody out of school 16 months
ago when they were in 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades. I'd read the
Unschooling Handbook and many other books and wanted to unschool, but
it's so SCARY when you're just getting started. I didn't buy a
curriculum on the theory that if I couldn't keep up with 5th grade and
below skills, I was in pretty bad shape! We did a little work on our
own, but my fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants personality quickly led to
unschooling, and we've been very happy. Everytime people say to me that
homeschooling 4 kids must be a lot of work, I say, "not as much work as
managing 4 kids who are in school - we've regained a peaceful life".
We're certainly not a typical family. Lots of animals, little if any in
the way of religious beliefs, lots of volunteer work, learning to be
friends with heavily Christian homeschooler friends - an enlightening
and rewarding experience, no TV restrictions, no bedtimes, conversations
in our house I'd hate to have more traditional friends see, a
family-wide passion for the homeschool theatre group, etc. It's nice to
find people who are a little more like we are than the typical
suburbanites I'm surrounded by. I hope I get to meet you guys on
another outing - maybe on a less busy DC day?! :)

The Cherry Blossoms were beautiful, but the crowds were NOT!!
I pulled into DC about 11:00(running late a little, plus traffic) and
then spent a good part of 45 minutes finding a place to park.
We got to the mall around 12:00 and looked around hoplessly at ALL
the groups of people there. My kids refused to let me walk up to
stragers repeatedly asking, "excuse me, are you unschoolers?"
So we went into the Natrl. Hist. museum.
It was way to crowded for me and my double stroller.
We walked around a bit, then decided it was too nice outside and went
and had a picnic, still hoplessly looking for folks who just seemed
to radiate "unschoolers". Man we blend well!
We then went to the Am Hist museum (crowded also)and then tried to
drive down to the Lincoln Memorial, cause it looked like rain and I
didn't want to walk that far in it. HA! I got stuck in more traffic
for another 1/2 hour, with no way of hoping for a parking space. So
with a very disappointed son, we headed out, but then got happy at
the suggestion of visiting grandma in Baltimore. She was so suprised
when we showed up at her door. It was worth the trip! AND those
cherry blossoms. The wind whipped up while we were waiting in
traffic to get out of DC, and some of the petals came into my van.
The window was only opened a crack, but there were so many, and it
was like it was snowing.
Anyway, I'm willing to try again, but next time we need a big sign,
or all wearing red shirts or something, AND come when it's not so
crowded(I hate crowds if you haven't already guessed).
Though, you all could hike over to Ocean City and spend a day on the
beach with me! Warm spring days are awsome here. Empty beaches!
Joanna (Who is determined to meet some real live unschoolers!)

OK, what do you consider WAY too many pets?

We have 2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 rat, 1 leopard gecko, 1 kingsnake, 1 parakeet, 2
fish, and up until last night, 1 mouse (now resting in peace with 3 ex-rats
in a consecrated corner of the yard). Oh, and I work with horses 3 days a
week but none of them live with us.

(The house is about 1,000 sq ft. but we have a decent sized suburban lot.)

Nancy, in San Diego with 2 kids, one dh, and many pets. I'll be one of
those eccentric 90-year-old ladies who keeps pet snakes.

Pam Hartley

We have a microscopic townhouse, so we'd cleverly limited ourselves to one
dog (Jack Russell Terrier), one cat (outweighs Jack Russell Terrier 3 to 1
<g>), and four fat girl rats... and then recently lost our minds and began
to collect Netherland Dwarf rabbits for the girls (and, yes, I admit it, ME
<g>) to breed and show. (Hey, they're only 2 pounds as adults. The rabbits,
I mean, not my daughters. Of course, a SMALL herd is considered about 30...)

Pam, with resigned husband Wally, cohorts in pet addiction Brit and Mikey,
and Miss MoneyPenny the dog, Blues Clues the cat, Florinda, Lily, Rose and
Miss Piggly Wiggly the rats, and Winnie, Hoppy, and Bouncy the rabbits (to
be joined by an as-yet un-named blue doe to be picked up this weekend...)

Okay, We have 5 dogs, 4 cats and 2 ferrets. This is way down for us.
At one time there were 6 dogs, 4 cats, 4 ferrets, 5 gerbils, (yuck, I
hated them), 2 guinea pigs, (don't start Shyrley - they squeak cutely,
but it costs the price of the rodent to have their teeth trimmed - it's
like spending $500 to have my dogs nails cut!. I don't want guinea
pigs!), and count them, 33 rats (the best, best pets!). Three of our
dogs are Dalmatians - the best proof I know that there actually might be
a God, one Lab - yawn, and one English Cocker, very sweet, but overly
needy. We do horses too - both of my daughters are Vaulters (gymmastics
on horseback), but we don't own them, and they certainly don't live with
us in Burke! BTW, I will always have Dalmatians, but my next breed is a
Jack Russell. I used to be a professional dog trainer, so I know my
breeds well, and JR's are just awesome!

Why do you have guinea-pigs teeth trimmed. I've owned GP's for years and
never had this done.
I'm intrigued.

My husband had a Dalmatian when he was a kid. Got hit by the mail truck 6
times. And it stopped at 6 *not* because the bulb of enlightenment finally
lit.

Not quite sure how that piece of Dalmatian data fits in with your theory ;-)

You know when I was the fulltime at home parent I was always getting into
"trouble" with dh about us bringing home strange or new pets. He didn't
appreciate them much.
Now he is the one home fulltime, he keeps bringing things home and I find
myself suggesting we don't need anymore pets!!
Not sure what that's about but it's been an interesting turn around for us:)

He's a big bruiser (for a Sheltie) already at 16 inches and 23 or so pounds;
we named him Frodo :-)

My big dog's best friend is a Dalmation, though.

It sounds like we have some guinea pig experts on this list. Does
anyone know why a guinea pig might lose fur on its back. One of ours
has this problem and I was wondering what others might know.

We read that it could be mites or ringworm.

Great!

Kate, how long have you been role-reversed? My dh and I reversed a month ago,
and I'm going crazy! So's he. I think it'll work out great in the long run, but
we're sort of still in transition.

Any pointers?

:-) Diane

I guess 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 ferrets, 2 Quaker parrots, 2 hamsters, 1 rat and 1
fish wouldn't count? My daughter worked at a pet store and brought home
the rat (that they were going to feed to the snake), and brought home the
dog (that they were going to send back to the breeder to be put to sleep)
and brought home the Quaker parrot (who plucked out most of its own
feathers). Thank God she works at the Art Store now. Deb K.

Well I was primary person home for about 6 years (although got a masters in
the evening) and then we both were in school for 3 years but managed our
schedules so one of us was always home. Now it's been 2 years since I was
officially working out of the home and he was home. It's difficult
sometimes and I don't know how long we'll do things this way. One of the
reasons I joined this list was to get back in touch with unschooling and
trust in my kids own independence. It's much harder to trust the process
when you are not part of it for 9 hours a day!

I am on a nice list for partners of stay home dads -- it's nice but not too
much traffic. [email protected] Most families are AP'ing and some
hs'ing.
I don't know about pointers but for me it's becoming more important to stay
in the loop of other hs'ers -- especially as there are so few here in the
UAE:)
Also we do lots of things together in the evening and the kids come to work
with me sometimes which is nice. I miss them but luckily I love my work and
so it's easy for me to go (especially knowing they are with dad).
