What does "Num Lock" do? (on the computer keyboard)

Have you ever had your nums locked? It's very painful. <g>

I don't have a num lock, but my guess is that it lets you use the
punctuation on the top row of number keys without holding down the shift
key?

My Num Lock is on the 10-key portion of the keyboard and when pushed,
allows me to use the numbers on those keys instead of what is written on
the bottom of each numbered key: Home or End, PgUp, arrows, etc. Hope
that is clear

It makes the set of keys that are to the right most side of
my keyboard into something resembling an adding machine keypad.
Instead of the key being "Home" it's 7, instead of up arrow it's
8, etc. I use it a lot when I use Quicken or a spreadsheet.
