An enlightened person forgoes release from rebirth

Don't think I have any answers or even know a bit about any of this, but......
Could it be possible that IF a soul chooses a particular body which is abused in this life, that soul has chosen to do so to help ANOTHER soul learn a lesson while on earth?
The abused soul has sacrificed his/her life (in this lifetime) to hopefully better someone's else life or soul.
That would be my only guess of what the purpose of choosing abused lives would be.

Karin

And as much as I believe we need some adversity to learn certain lessons, I
don't see any necessary lessons coming from rape, torture and abuse. sorry.
No way.
I like the way you put it Nanci.
There is no way to justify some of the random events that screw people up and
hurt them for life.
If you believe that a soul chooses all of that, then what would the purpose
be of intervention? If you think they chose it, then you'd just stand back
and let evil things happen to them right?
That's the danger in that beleif system imo.
If I believe it's random, and not right...then intervention makes more sense.

At least in Mahayana Buddhism.

No, because what's put into my path is part of *my* purpose for being on
this earth. If I didn't help when I could, that would hinder my own
growth. Using the excuse that they chose what's happening to them just
wouldn't cut it.

I've thought about this since I was little, and have been in and through
various "systems" of belief, and on this end of it, at 48, I don't care. I'm
agnostic about the existence of souls. I see interesting things happen, and
they don't prove there's an afterlife, I hear weird theories about why there
are 6 billion people on a planet that used to have none, and they all sound
goofy, but I look at a wadded up dishrag growing bacteria, and that seems
more like earth than a woozy seven-level soul-wash leading to perfection.
Why? What are those perfect souls going to do with themselves? Some
religions say: start their own worlds. Whoop dee doooo! What for!?

So although the soothing violet-lit incense-filled new age explanations are
kinda cool like getting your back scratched or your hair brushed, when you
ask "why?" no better answer than "it feels good" comes back.

IF my soul is going to last for many more lifetimes, what's the hurry? And
if I'm a big fancy bacteria with a computer and a car, what's the hurry?

Tonight we're having someone for dinner. That's for real.

Tomorrow morning a family I like a lot is coming for lunch and game-playing.

Kirby wants to learn to cook.

Holly is spending the night with her friend.

Those things are between me and any need to know what will happen when we're
all dead.

Ah, Sandra, I love this. This is really wonderful.
Thank you,
Deb L, going to buy new dishrags.

How about "why not?" I kinda like getting my back scratched and my hair
brushed. I like to feel good.

As a Taoist, my answer to souls and afterlife and why is "mu", which means
"no thing". It doesn't matter. But feeling good, and helping others to feel
good, are of foremost concern in my life. Connecting with the Tao, whatever
that life force that runs through all of us is, that's my concern. And those
connections are very real, very now, in how I deal with friends, family and
the world at large.

I'm confused. Who's hurrying?

Absolutely. It still doesn't negate the possibilities, though. :o)

Holly has some very small, and kinda irritating, friends.
And we have teenaged boys, and so cannot count on any leftovers.

A lot of Hindus and Buddhists!

Karma isn't a negative thing. It's balance, and the belief that things
balance out and that people need to accept some things graciously.

You can find prayers for deliverance from rebirth and suchlike, but not much
literature I've ever seen (okay, none that I've ever seen) about "rebirth is
forever--veg out and don't worry about it." They want heaven too, they just
think it's not one fatal accident away.

At the risk of being sorry I asked, what kinds of beings are these?

Isn't that the theory behind M. Scott Peck's "The People of the Lie"? That
the evil ones, the terrible people who seem to have no compassion for
others, are soulless? I read another book, a novel by Taylor Caldwell,
about a child who was like that; the kid killed his mom without a shred of
remorse, and was out to kill others as well. And then there's that classic
movie, "The Bad Seed" <g>

Aliens works, too.
