Lisa Heath & Mark Irons

Living in an expat enclave in conservative Hong Kong, I am surrounded by
boring, staid, overly "nice", closed minded "successful" professionals and
their wives/husbands and I'm desperate for more craziness in my life. I
miss my sister terribly after reading your posts as she's the kind of person
who do all those mad sorts of things including dying her hair pink! She
always helped me to let go and be silly! But she lives in New Zealand, ho
hum.

I was trying to think of something crazy I'd done with my kids recently
(apart from wearing some pretty funny dress-ups...) and I have to say I
can't really think of anything, and that's been an eye opener for me - I
need to get more silly (and work less, trying to do that...)

Anyway, I'm sure I'm going to like being part of this list since it's
exactly what I'm looking for as I embark on the wonderful, scary, exciting
and yes, crazy, adventure of unschooling my little girls (4 1/2 and 16
months).

All the best,

Lisa Heath
Hong Hong.

I can relate with being surrounded by ultra conservitives... when we first moved here yrs ago I "toned" myself down and did all the " normal" things that the mothers around here did and tried to "blend in"... after a while I realized I was not happy....I never really did "fit in" and I was doing my children a disservice by not being "true" to my nature ... so I slowly started letting myself "out" .... this last step was the pink hair -( thanks to Hannah Jenner, my girls and I make it a practice to do one crazy thing each day - life is too short)

I no longer get as many invitations to the local home school mothers activities.... but wow .. life is fun again ... I would not change a thing
Good Luck

Absolutely!! I live in the Texas Bible Belt where "what Baptist church do you go to?" is a really common question. Boys tuck their shirts in and "yes, maam" is said by children and adults to anyone over about 25. I also tried to fit in and was able to pull it off for about 3 years but I was miserable. So I came out and yes, my invitations fell off for awhile as well. But then I ended up finding a group of women that are just as nuts as I am and I couldn't be happier.

I just found this quote on my A Word a Day email; I thought it
appropriate for the thread :-) Nancy

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on
the
edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center. -Kurt
Vonnegut, Jr., writer (1922- )
