We're relatively new to homeschooling, and are wondering why we didn't
do this sooner. However, we also live in a area where homeschooling is
exclusively affiliated with religious groups and our options for
discussion/support always include religious beliefs. We're looking for
to make connections with other homeschoolers, but without relgious
intonations. I read what the desciption of this group is, but where we
live, I have to ask. Thank You in advance for a thoughtful response.

Nichole Fausey-Khosraviani

Mind me asking where you're from? In Texas, homeschooler brings to mind,
for most people, right wing conservative Christian fundamentalist. However,
groups sprout up all over the place to give secular folks a voice. Maybe
you want to start one for your own area.

In my almost-2-years-membership in this group, I've never noticed religious
undertones. Most unschooling groups are wide open to folks who follow their
own pattern of life.

Gold Standard

This list is dedicated to unschooling, which is usually quite different from
typical homeschooling. You should be able to find local homeschoolers
through yahoo groups or even googling your state and homeschooling. Maybe
add "eclectic" or "non-religious" to the search. What area are you in?

Jacki

six_morebooks

We're in Grand Rapids, MI. I've searched everywhere I can think of
for non-religious homeschool affiliations. Apparently, there are
none either here in GR or in Michigan at all. I'm afraid by starting
one myself I'll only hear my own echo.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

Someone's got to start one.

Or maybe there doesn't need to be one.

Are you required somehow to be sponsored by a group there? If not, maybe
just find friends for the kids through other interests, and get your own
unschooling info and encouragement online!

Non-religious homeschoolers are welcome on this list, but the list is about
learning, not religion-or-lack-of.

I've done both. Nothing in Michigan - the leads I did follow are
religous based.

This is not an unschooling list (though unschooling friendly) and it's from

Michigan. And, you're not alone. Plenty in Michigan homeschool for reasons
other than religion.

We're not required to be sponsored by a group, but I can't deny that
I'd like to know others who are experiencing similar situations to
mine. I rely mainly on the internet to get information on what is
available for homeschooling without religious aspects. The one
builing/association in Grand Rapids that is dedicated to
homeschooling is owned and run by a religious group. Finding friends
and activities is a challenge here because virtually everything is
supported, encouraged or exclusive to religious groups.

Thank You for your support and help. I'm grateful for the
opportunity to learn with you.

If any of you have time and inclination to look at that and send me additions

I'm so gratefull!!! The isolation we've experienced going through
this odyssey has been nearly crushing; we would so welcome support.
I've requested to join your group - Thank You, Thank You, for your
help!

Deb

PS. Honestly, and we have been searching for months, we have not
heard of or come across any homeschool people or organizations in
this area not affiliated with a religious group.

Don't discount all of its members just because the group is religion-based. Some non-religious families might have joined the group because they couldn't find any other group.

I'm involved with a local homeschool support group that formed because one woman didn't feel comfortable with the only other (at the time) organized group in town. She started her own. The group is going on close to 10 years now. It has members with a great variety of religious views, including atheism - if that qualifies as a religious view. A number of families left the religious-based group to join the group "without regard to educational, political or religious philosophy."

It is NOT where I get all my needs met, but gives me the opportunity to meet other homeschoolers in my area, some are unschoolers.

I do know a few locally who consider themselves unschoolers, but it does not necessarily mean that we will become best friends. I tend to seek friends more from those who have common interests.

One of my very best friends here in town is a homeschooler, not an unschooler. We have lots of friends among public schooling families too.

I get my *un*school support on-line, mostly.

Our secular support group is growing in leaps and bounds. We started with a Yahoo list group that id'd the group as a local secular group. People started contacting us. Then we set a park day and 2 people committed to being at the park every week rain or shine (that way if one of us can't make it due to kids or whatever, the other one usually can). That made all the difference. People know if they show up at the park somebody will be there.

The AOL homeschooling boards were huge and busy, with regular unschooling
chats and message areas.

The AOL HEM board was smaller and to the side. I'm guessing you mean the
former.

I still think fondly of those days, and fondly of when unschooling.com was
thriving, and someday I guess people will think fondly back on this list and
another few they liked in the good old days.

All kinds of unschoolers/ life learners/ child led learners are
welcome on the yahoo group I made that is based in Mid-Missouri:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OpenPathNetwork
Could you please add it to your list?
I started the group after being told that the Jefferson city group
that "meets in a church" and requires a "$15 fee upfront" before
they send any information about their group to potentional members.
I asked specifally if there were unschoolers in the group and they
wouldn't comment, but the information was also added that the kids
had "circle time" at every meeting. Those clues told me that the
group wasn't for us. So far my group Open Path Network is really
small but hopefully with more people becoming unschoolers and
getting on the web then we can meet more like-minded people close to
us. My 7yo son would love to have someone to play with - it's
becoming our biggest unschooling challenge to find playmates! If
anyone is in Mid-Missouri please email me! We're going to start
skate park/ play park days come spring and we would be thrilled to
have company! Barbara

We are a couple of hours down Southwest of you in Springfield and we have the same problem. There isn't even a group here, (If there is I haven't found it) and I doubt enough unschoolers anyway. I did find out last week, that there is a group trying to start a Sudbury School here. They are in the planning stages and looks like they will be for a while. But I did add my name to their email list because if either of my kids ever showed interest in going to school this would be ideal. Or rather most ideal, over private, public, or christian. There are some groups in St. Louis, if that isn't too far for you. We could go up to Kansas City... too far for us IMO though.

Hi Nancy - I know there are groups in St.Louis & Kansas City but
they're both a big drive from us as were in Mid Missouri. At least
gas is a little cheaper now and I could drive on occasion to meet up
if I could find someone who wanted to. Anyone who would like to talk
please just drop me an email.
I know quite a bit about Sudbury and Summerhill as originally that
was what I was going to do, to start a Sudbury school(I have degrees
in Education and Biology, not that you need degrees to teach in a
private school) and run it instead of just homeschooling. But I
couldn't get enough interest around here so eventually I kept
reading John Holt and found unschooling and decided just to do this.
I don't think I could send my child away to school, I want him to
have control over his own learning but I want to be there to guide
him & answer his questions if he needs me as well, although if he
wanted to go to school I would respect that.
I am going to try to do the X-box live thing in perhaps a year or
so, as he is only 7 now and there arn't many games geared towards
that young a crowd. I would really like for him to have some friends
to play with but I'm just not sure what else I can do to find them.
I just keep hoping that it will all work out eventually. Barbara
