Arnold and Sybelle

We do not own playstation, gamecube, gamebox, nintendo (did I miss any?). All my son has is a gameboy.

We are interested in getting one of those systems, but I am totally unclear on the pros and cons of each system. I know we want to get Dance Dance Revolution and racing games. We're not sure about what else in the future.

Those of you owning any of these systems, can you tell me why you own the one you do or if you would rather have something else?
Also, we are on a tight budget. Are there good places to buy these used (or places to stay away from)?

Thanks a lot!

As far as I know, Dance Dance revolution is ONLY available on PS2
(PlayStation).

We have 3 Nintendo GameCubes, and a PS2. We also own many many
GameBoys of all varieties. One reason we got the GameCube(s) is that
with a few extra pieces, you can 1. play GameBoy games on the
GameCube (with a GameBoy adaptor), and 2. use the GameBoy to get to
extra features in some GameCube games (such as Animal Crossing, with
a Game Link cable) and 3. use the Game Boy as a controller in some
games (like Zelda Four Swords, with a Game Link cable).

We also got the GameCubes because my kids prefer those games (they
like the Zelda and Mario characters which are Nintendo only). Donkey
Konga alone is worth the GameCube IMO. GameCube is the system my kids
always recommend as a "first" system, or if your kids are under 12 or
so. YMMV and all.

We got the PS2 for the sole purpose of hacking it to play Japanese
import PS2 games. :) It's great for that but I don't know if it's
good in other respects. :)

No opinion on Xbox, we don't own one and have never used one.

If you have a used game store, like Game Stop or EB World, you could
try those for cheaper systems. They usually have a decent return
policy for used equipment. They also sell refurbished ones which are
cheaper than new. Or, watch the ads at Toys R Us and Best Buy and
such, they'll sometimes toss in controllers or games as a bundle.
Also, our local Target was selling PS1's pretty cheap but it's an
older system and it may be harder to find games for it now.

DDR is only available for the PlayStation and XBox.

My daughter chose to get the GameCube originally because she liked the
games that are only available for the GameCube: Kirby, Mario, Animal
Crossing. At least it used to be true and maybe still is that GC has
more games for kids and preteens and XBox for teens and adults.

She eventually bought a PlayStation 2. She liked the Spyro games for a
while. Now about the only thing that's played on it is DDR. But it's
used *a lot* for DDR :-)

We have a GameCube too. One of the coolest features is that you can buy
a screen that attaches to the box, so you don't have to have a TV to
play it. It's also VERY car-friendly---with that screen and all---and a
battery adapter-cord thing. The games are tiny though!

-=-=-=-=-

No opinion on Xbox, we don't own one and have never used one.

-=-=-=

We bought ther X-Box first. BAAAAD move! The games for the X-Box were
way over his head (we got it when he was six). I'd asked several
people, and one of the adult gamers said that X-Box was THE best! Maybe
for him and other adults! But for a little six year old, the game
selection was crap! They've gotten better over the years, but I still
wouldn't start with that.

We've found that PS2 has the best selection of games. Mostly Duncan
plays those at friends' houses---and they can play his two systems when
they're here.

I like the Game Cube because of its portability. GREAT for those long
car trips to *conferences*! <G>

We have Gamecube, PS2, X-Box and Gameboys.

We bought the PS2 first because of the DVD playing capability, it was fine but then quickly picked up a refurbished Gamecube from Gamespot. My son really wanted to play the Zelda games, which is for Gamecube. We have had no problems with the refurbished one. When we bought the X-box from Bestbuy they also informed us that we can trade that one in when the new X-box comes out. So we'll be looking into that when that happens.

Your kids ages might be a factor in which system you pick. The X-box seems more geared to older kids. Ours is mostly used for the Halos. Although, Legos Starwars did come out for that too.

We also like the Gameboy Player attachment. We had a blast with Four Swords on that. 4 people can play that together! :)

We love DDR, have it for our Playstation 2, we've worn out 1 mat already. :D Quite the workout!

Costco sometimes has package deals with a game and extra controller or
whatever.

My kids have all those systems, some bought with their own money. You can
look through google or amazon to see what systems various games are available
for. I bet people sell used systems through amazon too, maybe, in case
you're not near a resale gaming shop.

We have a Gamecube just for the Zelda games and Super Smash
Brothers....if you have little ones Nintendo has more games for them it
seems.
Josh seems to play mostly PS2 games---but a lot of these are T and M
games, I'm not sure how old your kids are or where you are with that.
Xbox for the games that come out that are not on PS2---and at one point
he wanted to do Xbox live, but found out it cost money and has not
wanted to pay yet. I think that's a Christmas present or when I have an
extra $50 laying around.

Yep, and through Gamespot online. Our refurbished Gamecube came from there. Going through the mail didn't hurt it a bit.

Holly has gotten such good use out of Halo2, I'd like to recommend you bump
this up from the "if I have extra" category to the "much thought and
interaction=good for learning" category. Kirby paid for his own. We paid for
Holly's.

When we didn't have a DSL line we couldn't do it anyway, so Kirby and Marty
are paying 1/3 each of the DSL bill, too. It wasn't just for XBox live, but
for better computer performance for games and online cartoon/video stuff.

The thing is he really does not like Halo, but that could change if he
was playing the multi player stuff.
It is the back of my mind and has moved from up "Christmas" to "Let me
get this bill caught up and then I'll buy it" , but I already pay for
the World Of Warcraft subscription which is in that

"much thought and
interaction=good for learning"

category AND the DSL (which I personally could not live without) and he
pays for the Gamefly. I'm behind on my bills due to a few things that
broke down and a few missed serving shifts because of a stomach virus,
but the more I think about it I should be caught up in a month or so and
may be able to do it then. Plus there is still the whole getting the
Xbox and the computer near each other (not wireless, yet---Josh now
wants to turn his closet into his computer place once he heard about
your son's) along with buying the Xbox live stuff. No dh will not pay
for it----I'm still trying to get a pool out of the man, he's very frugal.
So......
I know, excuses excuses.

I just ask Josh if I could afford Xbox Live would he want it,
His answer: "Hell yes"

Gold Standard

This has probably been corrected, but Dance Dance Revolution is also on
Xbox. That's the version we have.

My kids LOVE our X-Box. They say it usually has "older" games for it.

Well that's a whole nother expensive thing, so never mind. <g>

If you think of it in terms of how many movies it would get or how many
hamburger meals or trips to whatever-he-does, it might seem more "in the budget"
(or not, I know).

I've been saving money by getting iTunes. I don't even have an iPod, but
for 99 cents I can get a song (and listen to clips of several others while I'm
looking, and move it onto a CD, and NOT go and buy a whole CD to get a song
(as I have done, oh, a hundred times in my life overall I guess). I've only
downloaded maybe 40 songs in six months ("me" meaning mine and Marty's and
Holly's picks). In that time I've bought several fewer CDs than I have in any
six month period for years. Partly coincidence maybe, but partly just
knowing it's there and I could go and get a song.
