How would you go about helping your child to learn about roller coasters?

After we looked at pictures of roller coasters online and went to various amusement park sites, I remembered hearing about a game called Roller Coaster Tycoon, wherein you can make your own roller coasters. We got the game and then Margaux's computer crashed. So, we will probably install it tomorrow. We've talked a little about centrifugal force and we swung buckets of water upside down in a circle so Margaux (7) could see how the water stays in the bucket just like people stay in the roller coaster when it goes upside down. What else can we do?

All ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

You can go ride rollercoasters! My son has been riding them since he was
about 4. He can't work up the courage go to on the really big ones, like
Raptor or Top-Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. He is very fascinated by them,
though. He avoided ones that made you go upside down until last year (he's
almost 11) and now he avoids really high ones.

He builds mondo roller-coasters on RCT, as well. He knows all about how they
are built and how they work, just because of RCT. Sometimes that hasn't
been helpful when he's trying to work up his courage to ride a new one, though.

RCT is kind of buggy, though. It has crashed various of our computers as
well, and it matters about what kind of processor, etc., of the computer. On
this newest computer we have no problems. It's a great program otherwise,
though. He has learned so much about money and managing things from that
program. I posted once about the words he has learned from RCT. I wonder if I can
find that? If I do, I'll repost.

The answer to this question might depend on why your child wants to know
about them...is it overcoming a fear, wanting to know about the physics,
interested in construction, preparing for a vacation at Disneyland (go to
the little one in Toontown first!), some other reason I'm not thinking
of....?

OH! And there's club for roller coaster fanatics. Their goal is to ride on
every coaster! I have friends who are members. They have jackets and
everything!

For those of you who were at the first two conferences, that's Christian
Thee and his partner, Bruce. They are huge coster fans!

Ride one?

OK, if that's too simple, there have been a couple of excellent TV programs
about them we've enjoyed. Try "google."

She's not quite there, yet, but I'm hoping next season she will be after finding out more about them and talking to friends. We're going to be writing letters to all Margaux's friends and some relatives asking about their roller coaster experiences. :o) And when Margaux's done playing some roller coaster game on the net (she's doing that right now), we're going to try to install RCT. Yippee!

Thank you for the great info about it. :o)

She wants to know about them because of a conversation I had with her dad about my love of them and his fear of them. :o)

Oooh, I'll tell her about that. That would be fun! She hasn't been on even one yet, but that would be a great thing to keep in the back of her mind. She has Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and Florida that she visits with regularity. Maybe we could start a coaster journal!... Sounds like fun. :o)

Thanks, Kelly!

Sondra Carr

The culmination of all roller coasters excursions would have to be the
almost insanely frightening "Roaster-Coaster" which I believe can only be
ridden at Burning Man and occasionally in the backyard of the designer's
house (in Michigan - I think.) But I would save that for a graduation
present as its designers claim that it's fueled by "go-go power."

It is a very cool set, my son put it together. He also was into roller coasters for a while. Keep your eyes open for sales, we got ours for more than 50% off!

We love it when it screams as the car reaches the top of the hill. <g>

Gold Standard

The mention of Burning Man brought to mine an independent documentary that
was done on a fellow who went to Burning Man with an experiment. He went
with nothing at all, not even clothes, to see if he could live in this
week-long self-sustaining desert art community on just the generosity of
others. It is an amazing indie film called Nothing Without You. I won't tell
you the ending, but the generosity of others can go so far! I'm not sure of
the DIRECT correlation with unschooling, however I could come up with a
whole bunch of INDIRECT correlations :) I'll post the website link when I
find it.
