SCEC issued a press release today warning parents about excessive commercialism in the Universal Studios filmed version of the beloved Dr. Seuss Classic The Cat in the Hat. The film, which arrives in theaters this Friday, has no less than 16 corporate sponsors including Pepsi, Hershey, Frito-Lay, Burger King and even Mr. Clean.

Is this really a preschoolers movie?? I thought that it was rated PG and
the previews I have seen show a bunch of kids whacking the cat in the
hat
in the crotch with a stick...

Good Morning,
I haven't seen this movie. I read the article & felt I should pass it on.
Frankly, I wish film makers would keep ads out of movies....but sadly, they don't listen to me :)
Have a great weekend!

My kids don't seem too interested in seeing it. They like the book. But
they also like Mike Meyers, so I'm sure eventually it will show up around here in
recorded form.

There's a movielovers list where they'll talk about it all you want:

I went yesterday with my sister and kids 11, 6, 4, and 2. None of us liked
it. The story wasn't interesting, the cat was annoying, and the crass humor
just wasn't funny. We knew it wouldn't be the book, but you could barely
tell it was based on the book. You can email me offlist if you want some
specifics. ~Rue

We went to see it yesterday. We felt compelled because we live only a few
miles from where they filmed the downtown scenes and had enjoyed watching
all of the scenery go up, and Dan had gotten to see a bit of filming there
too. As for the movie, I think the original poster was asking if it was
appropriate for preschoolers - and I have to say that I don't think it is.
I don't think there's anything in it to scar them for life, but there's
enough tacky stuff that I think I'd just pass on it for my kid if he were
still little. There is a half hour animated made for television version
that is much truer to the book that I understand to be quite good. Not that
I am a stickler for books and movies having to match, but I just don't think
tiny kids need jokes about "dirty hoe's" (a garden hoe), or Paris Hilton, or
butt cracks thrown into a film like this.

We own this and love it! it has songs by Allen Sherman that are very funny.

Paula, not going to see the new movie

Pam Hartley

My daughters, who LOVE the Cat and the Hat book, took one look at the
previews and groaned. <g> They refuse to go to Burger King until the Cat and
the Hat toys are gone.

I have to say, I'm glad Wally and I didn't have to flip a coin to see who
had to take them to the movie. ;)

Allen Sherman was a god. :) I've been keeping an eye out for CDs of his
songs for years, haven't looked recently, I better Google.

Pam - Check ebay right now.

Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure that it wasn't just based on
what I saw
on the previews. I just wonder how many folks are going to take their
young
children just because it *is* the cat and the hat. I have a feeling that
Dr
Suess is rolling in his grave...I know that he did not want his stories
to be
mass marketed.

Luckily my almost 7 year old has shown no interest in going...he has
seen the
previews and it does not seem to appeal to him. I will just avoid
mentioning
it to my 3 yo. :o)

I remember very fondly the animated Cat in the Hat, just like we love
the
animated Grinch who stole Christmas (we did not go see the new grinch
movie
last year either). I just really think that they missed the boat big
time
with both movies...oh well.

After the poem in the LA Times the other day, I decided not to see the
movie. I doubt if we'll even rent it.

Last evening, on the way back from a dance social ( very cool get togethers; lots of fun, lots of kids, held indoors) - we started to sing "Hello Mother; Hello Father" I'm going to introduce him to Brianna! That is Alan Sherman, right?
