Throwing Marshmallows

Crediting the original author (which everyone should do if possible, in every case)

For a while this was miscredited, but the original name has been restored in many places. If you want to help, here is the quote and the correct citation:
Learning can only happen when a child is interested. If he’s not interested, it’s like throwing marshmallows at his head and calling it eating.
—Katrina Gutleben

On my facebook page, April 22, 2010:

Sandra Dodd: :
Someone quoted the throwing marshmallows quote a day or two ago, but I could not find the post. Whoever owned that post, please add this note.
"Katrina Gutleben, who used to post as katgut, wrote that on the unschooling.com message boards in 2004-2005. ~Rue"

Jennifer V:

I quoted it on FB a comment to Brenda Ferns today. I wasn't sure who the quote was from, so, I googled and found this blog: throwingmarshmallows.com/home/mystery-solved I don't know either of those people, so, possibly Barbara could be taking credit for something Katrina said. ??

Notes below, about that site

Tehya Shea :

"Learning can only happen when a child is interested. If he's not interested, it's like throwing marshmallows at his head and calling it eating."

Sandra Dodd:

That's exactly what it is. It was up as anonymous, and someone I'd never heard of tagged it as hers, made a website with that name (which isn't there anymore) and told that blog owner it was hers. So it will be hard or impossible to undo. It's cited correctly in Rue's book.

(When I said that's exactly what it is, I'm not vouching for the quote itself in that format, so much as the problem of the citation.)

Jenny Cyphers :

yes yes yes! I knew it wasn't the Barbara person because I remembered when it was first said and knew it wasn't, but couldn't for the life of me remember who said it! Thanks Rue for crediting it and Sandra for letting us know!

Jennifer Varela:

Thanks for the correction! I couldn't remember where i heard it first, must have been Rue's book! Sorry for spreading misinformation!

Niki Lambrianidou:

I've heard some Unschooler saying this in an interview or youtube video, but it must have been a quote of Rue's book.

Joy Kelsay:

I saw this quote for the first time a couple of weeks ago on a fb status but with no name attached. It's such a great quote that I'd thought of it a few times since and wondered who wrote or said it originally. Really glad that we all know now.

Jenny Cyphers:

I'm glad I know Katgut's real name! I never knew. Every time I'd read her name, it reminded me of violin strings made from catgut! I'm happy to have a better association with Katrina, which is a nice name! I'm going to have to look at Rue's book again, it's been a while!

In 2010, that site had the quote with the wrong name. The site owner accepted thanks and credit for someone finally finding out where the quote came from. I contacted her and probably wasn't the only one to have done so, in those days, once the discussion started.

She was very cooperative in helping to clear up the confusion. Now, on her site as of 2021, she properly credits Katrina Gutleben: http://www.throwingmarshmallows.com/
