Hm...I don't know about that, but I know the Arizona laws are considered
pretty good...any many of the families in our homeschool group have definite
unschool leanings.

Dear Dawn,

We live in Marysville, about an hour north of Seattle, and homeschooling
is very mainstream here. I rarely get questioning looks when I am out with
my son in the middle of the day; in fact, many people correctly guess he is
homeschooled. There is a homeschool support group in my town, a homeschool
store about 20 minutes north of me, and a great convention every year. We
are not "oddballs" at all here in the Pacific Northwest! If you have any
other questions, feel free to e-mail me.

We lived in Seattle for many years and there are tons of unschoolers in the
City.

I went to the library today and since they do not have the Unschooling
Handbook (or ANY homeschooling resource books) I asked the librarian if she
could request it from another library for me. She looked shocked and said
"What for? Your kids are still little!" I said that I had started
homeschooling my oldest and she kind of rolled her eyes and said..."Well I
don't know if anyone will send us their book for this but I suppose I'll
send it through for you." GRRRRRR! Just had to tell everyone that. Arent
librarians supposed to be into education no matter what?

Lots of unschoolers, eclectics, and generally uppity homeschoolers in this area.
(Olympia, Washington -- home of the famous Olympia Oyster and the goeduck!)

Pris,
I'm a Washingtonian, and I had to laugh. I've known geoducks intimately my
whole life. The family used to dig them when I was small. Great memories.
My aunt would dive into a hole we had dug and we'd grab her ankles while she
tried to reach the thing before it dug too deep. It's kinda like a giant
clam with a looong neck. Also the mascot of The Evergreen State College in
Olympia.

It would be nice.

Any nice librarians on the list who would care to tell us how to better
communicate with the not-so-nice ones??

Mine are fine (don't even yell at me when we have late fees) but this is the
2nd time I've seen this lately.

the dry heat is here in Tucson... but it's still very very hot and horrible,
execept for this morning when it's raining and makes it feel about 80
degrees, which is comfortable.

Ahhh but it's better than that heat with the added humidity.
Trust me .... I have Multiple Sclerosis and heat is my enemy! Causes
major, all encompassing fatigue .... and boy oh boy do I notice the
difference between 85 F and 85 F with a high humidity factor.

It is absolutely amazing to me that I can survive the 85 F if there is
no humidity but throw in a high humidex (a scale of humidity measurement
here in North America) and I'm laying on the bed under the ceiling fan
for the entire day until it starts to cool off around 7pm.
Then I'm up to 3 am because my body temperature drops and the fatigue
lifts a little; throw in the fact that I've been lying around allll day
expending no energy .... oh what fun!
Thank goodness we have internet and now a satellite dish so I have
something to do at 3am ... the family doesn't appreciate me vacuuming at
that time of day <BEG>!

Give me DRY heat anyday!<BG>

I belong to a group that is SW of Chicago called Grassroots (I am in NW
Indiana). Also there are a few HOUSE groups in Chicago and the suburbs.
Both organizations are inclusive groups. She (or you) can email me

yup ... I had a prof in college (Univ of TX) told me I should be *ASHAMED*
of the fact that my relatives *STOLE* their land from the Mxn people (she
was a native of Mexico City) ... goodness, most of my fm mbrs were
peanut/watermellon farmers and traveling preachers ... mama always said,
"pick and choose your arguments" and this was one argument I chose to walk
away from, that is, until my grades were turned in!!! I never did convince
that prof that I wasn't from a fm of crooks/criminals ... yep, all those
people; Stephen F. Austin, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett were just a bunch of
criminals; give me a break???
