The crib that dh lovingly made with his own hands for his first born
child was finally used tonight . . . as a toddler trampoline! LOL!

My MIL spent tons on a crib.....I must admit that my dd slept in hers for two
years, only because I took one rail off, put it near my bed, slid over the
mattress, stuffed the cracks with pillows, and used it as a side car. My dd
could roll back and forth to nurse or be near me when she needed to. When
baby #2 came, we took it down, loaned it to a friend (who planned on using it
for naps) and added another full size bed next to ours where the dch and most
of the time, I sleep.

Oh the money we could have saved, uh?

That's a great idea! Hmm, maybe we shouldn't take down the crib.

Did you have any trouble with the bed moving and falling into the crack
yourself?? We would LOVE to have a family bed again but we are stationed in
Portugal where the military provides your household goods to you and our own
bed is in storage in the states. We have a queen size bed and with both our
kids in our bed there is hardly any room and I have even fallen out on
occasion. We have had the girls in their own room for a while now but I
miss them bieng in bed with us. We tried putting the two twin size beds
together to make a king size but it was terrible for whoever ended up in the
crack. Any suggestions would be wonderful as I miss sleeping with my
babies!

Holly,
I put one bed against the wall and the other one next to it, then I put very
thin, flat pillows over the cracks. So if the beds spread apart a little the
pillows saved me. The other thing you might consider, is something to keep
the beds from shifting apart between the box spring and mattress, like the
rubber you put under rugs to keep them from slipping maybe an idea.
Although, I have never tried it. Just a thought.....

Could you just put the mattress from your queen-sized bed on the floor and maybe do the same with the twin-sized beds? I know that works for a lot of people.

have you tried turning the 2 mattresses sideways - so that the crack is in
the middle of the bed - as well as the extra stuff you can do?

A mattress pad that is well padded might help as well - with the egg crate
too!

We used a roll of duct tape to fasten the frames together! It might sound
funny but it worked for 3 years until we got our kingsize. Someone more
handy could probably bolt them together.

I tried the sidecar thing with dd2, but found out pretty quick taht
she had to be touching me to sleep, so it was pointless trying to
move her back. She even had to sleep with bare feet so she

We have two 3/4size beds from Ikea, the mattress with legs type,
which fit together pretty well and don't move apart. They fit
snugly to the wall, too so I don't have to stuff down the side of the
mattress like I used to. The only problem we have is running out
of covers.

True...but in a pinch, I end up sleeping half in the sidecar, so there's
still more space. Besides you can sleep all the way to the edge of the bed
without the six inch or so "safety margin" most of us leave.

I'm meat too...we have ds (2.5) nominally in the sidecar, then me, then dd
(baby), then dh when he gets home about 2 or 3 am. Then the kids and I are up

all night anyway.

I got tired of being the sandwich middle and now my husband and two older
boyz sleep together in the boyz' room and the baby and I sleep together.
I like this arrangement the best. for a long time we had a literal
bed-room (wall to wall futons) but then I decided that I wanted the bed on
the frame to give us some storage space (at a premium here) under it *and*
a shelf for the bedroom books. I guess I'm getting old and conventional.

Ha ha, I'm tired of being the meat, too, but both little ones are still
nursing, so I'll do it a while longer. Brian stays in the sidecar at times,
and I do usually have room to turn over, so it's not bad.

It helps that we don't have any other rooms to move anyone into anyway. :-)

I have yet to have a child totally wean, but the two older ones no longer
nurse at night, thank god. That was on OK thing to do (nurse them both at
night) for a few years, but I do admit to being pleased when they stopped
(the last just stopped this winter when I was pregnant and I think the
older one stopped the previous winter). I figure I have 3-4, maybe 5,
years of night nursing with this most recent one, and that's ok, too, but
this time it is just one child, which makes a big difference:) And then
he will move into another bed, too.

We had a family bed until about a year ago, my 9yods still LOVES to hop in
bed with us. My beautiful 5yodd, HOWEVER, has been saying "can I go get in
my bed?" for a long time. ARgh, it breaks my heart sometimes, I'll even be
in her room, after reading her stories and lay down with her and sing her
one of the two songs I have always sang her and my son, and she'll say "I
want to go to sleep by myself mommy". As sad as it makes me, what can I do?
I just tell her ok, kiss her and go in the other room and whine to my
hubby....she slept only with us as an infant, the crib was my changing
table.....yet she is so independant. I guess I should embrace it. There's
nothing I can do when she says she wants to be in her own bed or wants to go
to sleep alone. I guess it's good that she is that content with being by
herself. Our son did sleep in his crib at times, but mostly with me however
not 100% of the time. Could that be why he still enjoys sleeping in our bed
so much? I wonder.....

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] unused crib-family bed Brynn-
I can imagine how said you feel when you're daughter is being so independent, but just think how wonderful it is that because you met all of her attachment and security needs when she was an infant you gave her the self-confidence to do all of these things on her own. I wouldn't doubt that your son might have been hanging on a bit longer because of those nights in the crib, but every child is different. You just have to do what works with each one, huh?

My second son is the same way - very independent.  He will go and lay down in his bed when he is tired(he is going to be 2 July 7th).  My oldest (3 1/2) still likes someone to lay down with him, and he co-sleeps with his brother.  They still get up and want someone in there at night sometimes - hubby gets that job.  He enjoys it really.  They are just different children with different needs.  My oldest though is more outgoing to strangers - goes up to them and talks with them.  My youngest will wander off and not even look back.  So I am sure you are doing what is right but they just have different night time needs.

Brynn-
I can imagine how said you feel when you're daughter is being so independent, but just think how wonderful it is that because you met all of her attachment and security needs when she was an infant you gave her the self-confidence to do all of these things on her own. I wouldn't doubt that your son might have been hanging on a bit longer because of those nights in the crib, but every child is different. You just have to do what works with each one, huh?

We had a family bed until about a year ago, my 9yods still LOVES to hop in
bed with us. My beautiful 5yodd, HOWEVER, has been saying "can I go get in
my bed?" for a long time.

in our house the sleeping arrangement is: in my double bed (no frame, just
mattresses on floor, against wall) dd # 3 against wall, dd # 2 in the
middle, then me on the outside nextt to side rail (in case dd 3 nurses in
night and ends up on my other side by mistake). dh is in br # 2 on bottom
bunk of bunk beds or on couch in liv. rm. dd #`1 is either on a fouton in my
br., on top bunk with daddy or (as of tonight) in her own brand new basement
room. (we'll see <g>). Confusing to others, but it works for us.
