Holly went.

That was less than an hour's notice, as an initial problem. <g>

And it seemed perhaps that some kids' chat-access was blocked.

If you let your kids go to such chats, PLEASE make sure they're on an account
that is cleared for chatrooms! Poor kids were frustrated trying to get into
the right place.

Maybe practice a bit maneuvering chatrooms before time if it happens again.

Holly was totally excited about the concept and would love to do it again!

Basically, if you're on AOL you go to "find a chat" (by a pulldown menu in
the "people" or "friends" area) and then click "enter or create a private
chatroom" or it might say "private chat" (depending on which AOL version and which
computer). Then type in urinvited or whatever the designated chat name is.
I'm not sure how to do it from AIM, but there's a way, I think.

Anyone who types that in will end up in the same "room." It's like an
instant message with more than one person.

If people want to try again tomorrow, Holly's interested. 11:00 pacific is
noon Mountain, 10:00 central, 9:00 Eastern. We'll try again.

If someone wants to propose a different name and time that's okay too.

If there are any "night owl" chatters I'm sure Lanora would be interested.
She is usually online from about 9pm on, off and on but would be sure to
remember a chat meeting.

Moly is interested too, but we didn't get the announcement until the chat was
over. If the details are worked out tonight then all the kids will know the
time way before hand. I would like to suggest something a bit different, :o)
like 1pm central, 2pm eastern, noon mountain, and 11am pacific. (Sandra, I think
your times are off <g>)

Another time that might be good would be evening hours. Moly stays up late
most nights with me and I know she would chat then as well.

I'm guilty for poor planning on today's chat. I guess one good thing is that only 3 kids were involved in a chat that didn't go well technically! I apologize to those 3 though :-( It wasn't my intention to be on the chat. I just wanted to help set it up for my dd.

I have AOL installed on one computer in my house. I installed only AOL AIM on the other computer (it has less than 500 MB free drive space so can't take any more programs!) I was not able to get on the chat on the computer that only had AIM. With only AIM, there isn't an option to search for chats. If someone with AOL sends a link to the chat to someone with only AIM, the person with AIM gets a message that the link doesn't work. At least that is what seemed to happen on my two computers.

It does work to use the Buddy List "Chat" on AIM to invite other AIM users to a chat, (regardless of whether they have full AOL or not) except that the person starting it would need to know the addresses of those interested. As Sandra mentioned, some kids have chats blocked to their screen names.

That is all I can figure out so far. Unless we go with a different service for the chat or someone else has a better understanding of how this works. Doesn't someone have a teen who knows how to do this? How do they get on chats together?

Holly and Marty are definitely candidates for that. After 10:00 here we let
them use the main phone line too, so two people can be on at the same time.

We have AIM, not AOL. My daughter says that to search for a chat and you only have AIM, go to http://www.aol.com Click on Hot Chats under People Connection. All the chats that are going on will be listed.

She agrees that if you want the chat to be private, then the first person invites people to chat. Others can invite others, but they must know each other's screen names before hand.

We have four different chat programs, Lanora talks to different people who
use on or the other, so we can be on any of them, AIM is fine. Do we have a
name for the chat so they can meet there? I think she would probably be up
for a chat even tonight at 10 pm pacific time.

You don't need to go there if someone else is already in the room. If she
sends and IM to someone IN the room, they can send them a link. Do links pass
to AIM accounts? I really thought so.

To do that, you drag the heart from the chatroom into an IM.

So they can all get into a chatroom either by deciding the name of the room
in advance or by knowing one of the kids who'll be there and IMing her/him.

"Duh" is too easy, and tacky. Does she know all the kids who might want to
be there? If not, she might want to plan a name and time and all that, or
help those who are! Tell her I said so! <bwg>

If everyone had understood it there might've been four kids in the chatroom
at once today, but it didn't happen because they were confused. They were in
various states of IM trying to figure out how to make it work.

Sandra

crystal.pina

No, Sandra, she said duh to me because I was telling her something she already knew. I didn't understand her correctly the first time, well, actually, she didn't explain it to me fully the first time. So she said duh to me. She is not the one who wants the chat. I just asked her how to do it so she came over and showed me. I was about to write "Good idea" to you when she said that, so then I decided I don't know enough myself about what I was telling people to do.

This might only be true if they all have AOL accounts. When we tried today, once of the girls had an AIM account, but not an AOL account. Two people with AOL accounts sent her a link to the chat and it didn't work.

It appears to me that when you start a chat on AIM, it doesn't have a name. Instead it has a very long number.

Maybe if someone starts it from AIM the rest can join IF they've e-mailed a
central location to say they're interested? Or let someone know? What's a
good plan?

An easy way to do it:

The chat coordinator announces their AIM name (which is their screen
name for those on AOL) in advance - in the chat announcement.

Anybody who wants to chat gets on AIM (or AOL) during the chat time
period and IMs the chat coordinator who then sends them an "invite."

Have a backup chat coordinator - announce that person's AIM name, too,
just in case the first person has technical problems themselves. It
happens.

I'll be the coordinator: AIM is melonary
I don't have a backup. Any volunteers?

The Scanlons

Perhaps this is a bit archaic, but I used to use a program called mIRC. You
can set up the room and call it whatever you want. "Unschooling" might be a
good name. Anything with "teens" in it attracts weirdos. You can set up a
"bot" so that the room always stays open. The bot can do all kinds of neat
things. You can schedule chats and/or just show up and see who is around.

I don't know anything about the new-fangled AIM, etc.

I figured this one out too. When you start the buddy chat process on AIM, it puts a number in the name box. If you want a name instead, you highlight the number and change it to a name. (In case anyone besides me didn't know that)

Lanora could be on earlier, if anyone is interested in an earlier time I'll
just let her know when they will be on.
