Duncan made up a game this moring---it's kind of a blend of D&D and Yu-Gi-Oh!
and a board game and--anyway---VERY involved. I told him about D&D which I
played as a teen (but it was my friend August's game---and he was the ---what?
Dungeon master?).

I don't really "know" *how* to play---I was just a regular attendee and had a
blast---I had a really cool character, too. But I told Duncan I'd find him
the game. Problem: I've never seen one in Volde-Mart, the
store-which-should-not-be-named. I really have no idea where you get one. (I know, I know---I can
google it), but can you actually buy one in a store? Or what's the deal? I'm
guessing you can't find them "used" as they are personalized, right?

I need to get more info---off to google.

He needs to find someone running the game. One person acts as a dungeon
master (DH runs the games for the kids) and the rest are the 'characters'.

You can buy the books - Players Guide and Dungeon Masters guide in
Borders. The books tell you how to roll the characters etc etc. Simple
scenarios can be bought from games shops if your Dungeon Master doesn't
want to design his own world and scenario.
Ebay has a whole bunch of 'used' Guides and scenarios.

The gaming shop people took Marty to last year.
A new edition just came out. You might be able to get the prior edition
cheap now.

Maybe if you call a big used book store they will have one OR they'll know
which book store deals in used gaming stuff.

Maybe half.com or half price books.

I've seen the books in Barnes and Noble and other big book stores.

TSR also put out a beginner's game that has a bunch of short scenarios that
introduce the rules and slowly build up the complexity of the game. It's
called the Dungeon and Dragon's Adventure Game: The Adventure Begins Here!
It's in a flat box, about the size of one of the manuals. You don't need
anything extra to play it. It comes with the relevant portions of the
manuals. It was only $9.99 at Barnes and Noble.
