The guy must have just bought his bike!! I've never had any problem cruising
past anyone on a mountain bike on my race bike...NEVER.
Even guys in way better shape than I. I'm glad you embarrassed him since he
was so rude!

And not all "lycra set" bicyclists are the weekend type ya know!! I ride my
bike regularly thank you, bike tights and all.

I thought you had a race bike too Shyrley.
Have you found that riding your mountain bike makes you ultra fast on the
race bike? That's been my experience.

I ride a road/tourer so its heavier than a race bike but much lighter than a moountain bike. It's fitted with front n rear panniers and fenders and lights. Has the drop road handlebars too. Wider tyres.
They are 700x32.

By Lycra set I mean them people who think what you wear is the most important part of cycling and are poseurs. Those are the ones who would never help you fix a flat and they sneer at me with my bike
festooned with bungee cords and stuff. I even bungee my walking stick onto my bike so I can hobble round the supermarket at the other end of the journey ;-)

I learned that bikes don't fit in suitcases today :-(

Really really must pack for this trip....

Damn! :)
There are some cool bike carriers for airplanes if you're flying.

I actually was thinking about saving for another bike since I can't carry
much on this one. Yours sounds awesome.
I want to get in the habit of using mine for transportation more. This isn't
the most bike friendly town though...sigh.

We have the same problem here. Our town isn't very bike friendly. We both have bikes - I really want to get them road worthy and be able to go to the store, etc....soon!

Loudoun County (basically a DC suburb hell) isn't bike friendly at all. No bike paths, signals that wont register bikes, neanderthal sheriff.
But I'm pig-headed.

Good for you!! I've been called the same. We have a van - we need it in order to powwow. I hate driving it up to the market for a few things - as soon as I can afford it, I'm getting our bikes on the road.

Pig-headed....yup - been called that!

I get called worse than that. And not just cycling. Over unschooling too. I can offend people just by announcing that I 'unschool'. I offend them by cycling too. Without opening my mouth people will start
justifying their 3 SUV's and their curriculum.
Weird.

I get called "sick" and "freaky" because I own RATS. Our society has such
bizarre hang ups....sheesh.

I hear you. Brianna & I know we need the conversion van. With my back, I cannot sleep in a step van - on a low matteress. I wanted a van we could sleep in - comfortably.

We load it - go to powwow - set up (very tiring) and we need a comfortable place to sleep.
Last year, as we ran out of our tent because a tree was breaking and about to crash onto it - I decided that we would be sleeping in something that was mobile.
and security is an issue.

However, we need to get the money to fix the bikes; we are pagans; I need the exercise.
