Just out of curiosity. My oldest is just barely five, and all of a
sudden, today, he started calling me "Mom". I've never been anything
but "Mommy" since he learned to speak. Now I'm suddenly "Mom". It
sounds weird to me, but he seems completely casual saying it. Makes
me sort of happy and sad at the same time.

I've always called my parents Mommy and Daddy. I know people have
usually stopped by the time they're my age, but I never wanted to
hurt their feelings or have that awkward moment when I suddenly
switched from Mommy and Daddy to Mom and Dad, so I just never
stopped. My husband and his sister always say "Mom and Dad" and they
even say it that way without the "my" when they're talking to non-
family. I say "My mom" when I'm talking about her and "Mommy" to
her, but they say "Mom" either way.

Just wondered what other people's kids call them.

Mom.

I called my mom "Mommy" until I was grown and irritated at her and wanted to
depersonalize it. <g>

My sister's kids call her "Irene."

I'm thinking of four other homeschoolers who've been over lately and they all
say "Mom" of their moms too. One calls her dad by his name, but I think he's
a stepdad.

My MIL and I have deep controversy that we don't require to be called Mam or sir.

The only "good manners" we relate to them when speaking to others is Please and Thank You. But not to us, and not for every single situation involving others.

My kids call me "Momma" , although I spell it "Moma" and they laugh at me
because they say it's wrong. ( just good natured teasing) I spell it Moma
because that is how my Moma spells it :-) Its really more like "Mama".. They
call me Moma most of the time, unless they are hurt or sad or lonely, they
will call me "Mommy".. Hmm, except for Landon, he's not did the "Mommy"
thing in a few years, hes 16. They call me Mom if they are yelling for me or
referring to me. "Go ask Mom, Where is Mom.. etc". They call refer to their
Dad in the same way. Generally they call him Daddy, but for reference or
attention getting, they say "Dad". Same goes for me and my parents and DH

Those were cute!

I had forgotten Marty kinda did that.
He said it four times:
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM!

And then he waited expectantly with big eyes and eyebrows up for me to say,
"What, Marty?"

Often and for a couple of years. It was cute.

Just kidding. (I couldn't resist!)

Actually, we call each all sorts of silly stuff from Pookie kid/Pookie mom
to just plain "mom" and "Marji." My favorite, though, was this one time
when Liam was about 2 or 3 years old. We were visiting good friends, and
the three of us (me, Jim [dad], and Liam) were sleeping on a futon at our
friends' house. Liam had gotten a toy light saber (the first he had ever
seen) and was up REALLY early playing with it. He was standing up on the
bed in between us and poked Jimmy right in the eye with it. Liam said
seriously, "Sorry, Jim." He had never called him "Jim" before. It was as
though he was waiting for just the right time to use this cool new name.

Even then, it was really funny.

To me, "Miss" First Name sounds too young, too "preschooly" That is a
common practice around here ( maybe other places too) Children in daycare
and preschool ( and sunday school and bible school) call thier teachers Miss
First name. I guess because its supposed to be a sign of respect. Little
kids have a hard time saying or remembering last names so they those in
authoratative roles Miss First Name. Of course, Miss First Name gets
switched to Miss Last Name as soon as they hit Kindergarten. UNLESS they
occasionally have a teachers assitant in the lower grades that has a
difficult last name. Its weird is'nt it.

It's funny in our house because my ten year old is my dh's step child so she calls him Gary (he has been with us since she was 1 1/2 ) and the two year old calls him Daddy but sometimes will say, "Where's Gary?" and my dh hates that! Confusing for her I am sure:) I am Mama to all. Kelli

When my kids were still at the PS and my son's third grade teacher had us in for yet another meeting on "his behavior" issues, she told us the fact that he referred to me as "mommy" showed how very immature he was and in need of some serious "growing up". This was when we took them away from there (MUCH TOO LATE I KNOW!!). Anyway - Kate calls me Mommy, Mama, Miss Muddah (when talking in her many different voices....) -- Patrick calls me Mom.

Jon Phillip reminded me last night when I went to bed of one my favorite
things he calls me.

I went to bed and he was snuggled up with his Dad. I said.. "Who is that in
my bed?!?!" ( friendly, amused tone).. He said.."Its Jon Phillip!"
(giggling).. I said.. "Jon Phillip??? who is Jon Phillip?" Giggling more he
said. "I'm your son!" I said" My son? my SON? I thought you were my
little boy?" Crawling into bed, he snuggled up beside me and hugged me, and
said.."Im AM your little boy, and your are my sweet Moma" Then I
remembered that he calls me sweet Moma pretty often. Like as a greeting..
HEY sweet Moma, Good morning sweet Moma.. Or when he asks for something..
"Will you get me some drink, sweet Moma" Ethan used to call me Special
Moma when he was younger.

While contemplating all of this before I went to sleep, I also thought about
what I call my children. I kissed JP goodnight and said "good night,
sweetheart" Ethan came in and I said.. "night night, babe" I call them
honey, sweetie, babe, sugar pie, other terms of endearment. I call Anna ,
chick and girlie. I call the boys, "son" and buddy or bud.. I also have
made up names for them like JP is punky doodle. or Japula ( long story..
and its funny too) Ethan is Feefon ( cause that is what Anna called him as a
baby).. Landon is Landino, he used to be Boo-chi when he was a baby... Anna
is Annabana.

I call my husband Gray, his name is Gralyn. I have always been Teresa.
Not Terri, not Teesie, and I like it that way. What I hate most is when
folks call me "Treesa".. ughghg.. and I get that alot from country folks..
lol

Eek! My quoted goof looks a little weird without my "just kidding"
disclaimer. Actually, my brother calls our mom "Mother." I don't know
*where* he got that from! No one else does.

Good point!! Anyway, that's because Anakin and Padmé probably didn't have a
family bed. But, I guess we'll find out in Star Wars III, right?

Liam probably doesn't remember the incident, but he's going to love it when
I point that out to him!

I never wanted my kids to call me by name, though I wouldn't have said they
couldn't. I just told them they were the only kids in the whole world who
could call me Mum or Mummy, and they stuck with that.

My grandson recently took to calling both his parents Unny, because they
call each other Honey. <G>

That's what dh called his parents. He goes through periods of insisting
the kids call him "father" but I refuse to answer to "mother" (he was
going to start insisting on that too at one point).

My kids usually call me "mom," unless they're someone else. If Katherine
is Thomas, I'm Annie and Brian's Clarabel. If they're Mary and Laura
then I'm Ma. If Katherine is Thomas the horse I'm Tom. So I can always
tell who to answer depending on what I'm addressed as.

Now I'm suddenly "Mom".

I'm turning into Mom slowly from Mommy, too. My theory is that it's easier
and shorter to spell. It was Nathan's first written word. Then Nathan, then
Dad, then pancakes, then penis, then Stuart (Little) and finally Julia (his
sister). It's a slow evolution, probably six months.

It's also very schoolish. I just tell them to call me Elizabeth, it's long
enough without the Miss in front of it. But it never occurred to me that the
Moms might be requiring it. I thought it was just a preschool thing.

Keith will refer to me in third person to the kids as "mother" but this way:

"You need to ask your mother."

Not always, but I've heard it and even lately.

I always hear "your mother" in my dad's voice. I don't mind being
referred to that way, but really hate it as a direct address. It just
seems so formal and stand-offish. Let alone having it mandated. :-P
