How did people sand wood before sandpaper was invented?

I don't know.
Before there was sandpaper there was emery (sp) cloth. But I don't know
when that was invented.
Folks have been grinding lenses forever and they used to use glass to rub
an abrasive in, using finer and finer grain until the lens was as smooth
as they needed.
I know when you plane wood, if you're good enough, it comes out very
smooth. Don't know when planes were first used but they used to have
draw knives too.
Also, wetting wood to make the grain stand up and then burning it with an
open flame makes the wood smooth.

Don't know.

By using the bottoms of feet - heels in particular? ;-)

Using wet sand on leather, using progressively finer sands and finishing
with wood ash.

Also, scouring rushes or a type of reed.

Some used sharkskin or some animal skins.

Thats all I could find.

Just guessing but with sand or grit and another piece of wood or a cloth or
some such other thing?

With the same stuff they glue onto sandpaper now?

Depends on what needed sanding?

lava rocks for coarse? harder wood on a softer wood?

I don't know. :)

Yeah. It's "sand" (you smart-aleck) but how did they put it toward the wood
without splintering and sanding their own hands, THAT is the question. (And
thanks to those who gave me evidence and good speculation.)
