When I was about 10 or so I read a book about a girl named Elspeth who (after
her parents died) took her little brother from their home in either Ireland
or Scotland to Liverpool. From there they got on a boat to Canada and went to
either Manitoba or Saskatchewan as pioneers. I really want to find this book
again! The copy I read had a picture of a girl and a little boy standing on a
ship deck against the railing. Anyone know what book I am talking about?
Title?
Thanks!

Did a little bit of searching and so far came up with this one:

http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid=1182417&domain_id=1856&meta_id=1

But, it doesn't sound quite right. can you remember any other the other
characters' names and/or the approximate publish date?
This is a good site to search on:

http://www.alibris.com/home.cfm

I'm new to the list and I'm thoroughly enjoying everyone's company. Such
a joy to know mine are not the only kids in the world to be sitting in a
classroom or in a desk at home being forced to 'learn'.

I do not know your book but we read a real good series called "Beyond
the Western Sea" books one and two by Avi. You might look into it.
About famish Irish finding their way to America. The big sister
probably about 15 is in charge. Lisa

I found my book! Its called *Journey of the Shadow Barins* by Margaret Jean
Anderson. It is out of print, and our library doesn't have it. I looked on
Amazon, but they only have it used, which wouldn't be so bad except you can
only buy the used books with a credit card, and we don't use those. (although
I have been thinking lately that it might not be a bad idea to get one.) So
if any of you happen to have a copy of this on a bookshelf, and would be
willing to send it to me to read to the kids, I would be eternally grateful!
(and I would send it back of course <g>)

I checked online for my library and they show the name as "Journey of the
Shadow Bairns" (slightly different spelling). If you checked with the
spelling 'Barins" it may not have shown up. There are also several copies on
half.com (you'll need a credit card though).

Good Luck!

Some of Amazon's sellers will take a check or money order. You might
want to contact the specific seller. Even if they state they accept
credit cards, many people are more than willing to bend for a ready
buyer with money in hand.

Used sellers on Amazon must go through their credit card process --
Amazon gets a cut there too. I searched www.addall.com and found many
copies from independent sellers where a credit card is not necessary.
It is "Bairns" by the way. Looks like an intersting book. They also
have cheap paperbacks of it on www.half.com but I think you need a
credit card there too.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible
warning.

Yeah, I just spelled it wrong. <g> excuse the typo that the spell catcher
thinks is right. I will look into this addall.com, I have never heard of it.
