This is the part that would scare me most. The MIL can be kept away from the
kids, but not if the husband thinks what she did is not that big a deal.

And then to talk about how she'll take over the kids so the wife can work,
or how the husband should leave the wife and she'll help him raise the kids?
Sick sick sick. I would not find this a matter for complacency.

I hope I'm wrong, and the husband is way more outraged and firm on all this
than came across.

Some men just won't stand up to their parents. My husband has never
had a (major) reason to, but I know how incredibly hard it would be
for him to do so.
