I believe we have discussed music lessons on this list recently. I am
wondering what is an avrage price to pay for lessons? My son wants to learn
the clarinet. We have tried a hs group lesson that a local music store has
provided but ds is not happy. He says he is not learning anything and his
questions go unanswered.
I have found a woman locally who sounds great but want to know what I
should expect.

Depends on the area (and sometimes degree of demand for that
particularly teacher). Can go $10-$15 per half hour (double for an hour
- though beginning wind instruments usually do halfs.)

If you want, off line I can send you my book section on choosing a music
teacher.

Is your book in bookstores? I live in Ohio. I wouldn't want to take

It is making its way into stores, but slowly. It is available with free
shipping (checks only, I don't do the credit card thing) through my
website at www.skylarksings.com or through Amazon/Barnes & Noble
online, etc.

Separately, I'm sending on the note on music teachers. No taking
advantage - I offered!

The lady I am considering advertises for children with ADD, learning
disabilities,
giftedness, etc. She sounds very enthusiastic. She gave me a price of $23-$25
for 1/2 hour. I don't know if that's high for my area or not. I want her to
teach my son to read music.

My younger daughter, an extremely gifted pianist (now 9 -- and she plays
Mozart, Bach, and Gershwin fluently and can sightread anything!), would
probably be diagnosed as ADHD if she were ever in school. She is
absolutely always in motion, almost never opens a book, is terrific at
math provided she doesn't have to spend more than 15 minutes at it at a
time. Put her at the piano and she sits still (other than the hands!)
for an hour! Put her in the gym and she never gets distracted. In my
experience, ADD (if it really exists at all), is highly environmentally
and situationally specific -- if it were me, I wouldn't assume that
your child's ADD will have any effect at all on ability to learn music
well -- and I might (without knowing him/her) suggest that looking for
approaches to cope with her/his weaknesses rather than maximize his/her
strengths (the urge to learn music) might not be the wisest way to go.

There are teachers who charge by the month rather than the lesson
because they are booked up and don't have flexible schedules, and can't
deal with rescheduling cancelled lessons (or afford to lose the
income.) This is not necessarily unreasonable in and of itself, though
if it were me, I'd insist on several trial lessons (for which you pay,
of course), before going on to a monthly system.

I've just finished this book and really enjoyed it. It contains much
more than information on music lessons and is very inspirational when it
comes to trusting childrn to tell us what they need. Plus it has some
cute pictures of David's children!

We have a newly forming private band class in our community, for
homeschoolers and some private school kids. The cost is $30 per 4-week
month. If at least 11 families enroll the cost will be only $15 for
additional family members. Violin classes are also forming. A class for
6 to 8 year olds $10 per 4-week month (30 minute classes). Children ages
9 and up will meet for one hour at a cost of $20 per month. All students
will be responsible for their own instrument and music books.
