Helping someone understand themselves better - helping them understand how
they are contributing to their own problems - is NOT the same as blaming
them for getting beat up or defending the person doing the beating.

That is true ... *if* the person in the specific instance is, in
fact, contributing to their own problems, and *if* the intent of the
information is actually to help someone understand themselves better,
and not transfer the blame from the abuser to the victim.
