I am a Christian and I am on a few Christian Unschooling Lists and various other lists. I DO feel as though it is my responsibility to raise my children a certain way AND chastise them. Does that mean that I beat them (even lightly) with a dowel? NO NEVER. Does it mean I do not unschool? I dont think so. Does it mean I can be a unschooler as well as a Christian? I think they CAN mutually exsist.
So speaking as one of THEM, I feel as though your generalization is WAY off base. And really isnt that what all the fuss about to be or not be an unschooler was about? Maybe we should NOT make blanket statements about others that we have no REAL intimate knowledge of.
JUST MY NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION! :-)

Not involved enough, I think!

It was creepy to read that she had marked the Bible passages about her duty
to discipline her children, or whatever. That's big on some of the Christian
homeschooling sites. That God will punish parents who fail to chastise their
children. They justify spankings and (light) beatings (with dowels) by
saying if they DON'T do it they're not obeying God.

Vivian,
What does it mean when you say chastise?
I have an image of the word but would be interested in *your* idea.
BTW, Sandra could out-debate the POPE on the subject of being christian so
watch out! :o) LOL

Could you elaborate this please? To me, chastising them is the opposite of what unschooling is about, respect. But instead of jumping to conclusions, I would like to hear more.

Websters
Chastise-1: to punish esp. bodily 2: to censure severely: CASTIGATE

I looked up castigate- to punish or criticize severely

I have nothing further to add.

The pope isn't considered Christian.

He sure is Christian compared to me, a Jew.
Maybe not to a member of a Protestant denomination.
Catholocism is a form of Christianity, just like Protestantism,
episcopalian, Seventh Day Adventist, right?
Would a Catholic describe themselves as Christian?

By some Christians. I'm sure the Catholics consider him one.

Why is it that the Bible says " call no man thy father, save thy father which is in heaven" -(a meaning a father in spiritual leadership - and yet we have the Holy Father - (I may have this title wrong) and various priests, etc. who are called "Father so - and so"?

Of course, the pope IS considered Christian! Perhaps not by you, but
it's not the case.

This one would......though the connotations of that
label.......fundamantalist, Bible thumping, right wing conservative.....do
not come anywhere near describing me. I guess 'Christian' is not nearly
broad enough to describe catholicism (litle 'c' on purpose), actually.
The Catholic faith encompasses much more.

Susan....who's not considered a "good" Catholic by some other Catholic's
standards. Dh says I'd be considered a heretic by many. I think its
arguable. But I have a sense of being on a faith journey.

Susan,

Sound like you and my mom would get along famously! She is a
heretical catholic too and has been since about 1945.

Wow! I would like to get together with her......I have no Pre-Vatican II
life experience. I find myself wondering what it must have beem like to go
through those major changes.
Locally, there was a HUGE stir over how the cathedral would be renovated -
Oh, no.....you can't change it (i.e., move the tabernacle, altar, etc).
I'm really intersested in how Catholic life must have been before
V-2.....though I'm sure it's shadows lurked during my childhood experience.
