Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] Statistically
Bridget E Coffman
> So maybe it was statistically likely that(Stereotyping is
> Bridget's agreement involved some pressure, but using that kind of
> probability to assess an individual can be completely invalid.
> often unfair to individuals -- and very frustrating.)Is THAT where this problem stems from!!! Well let me clear up a few
stereotypes:
Statistically, I am likely to believe in monogamy.
Statistically, I am likely to be Christian.
Statistically, I am likely to be either Republican or Democrat.
Statistically, I am likely to believe that extra-terrestrial life does
not exist.
Statistically, I am likely to be a public school parent.
Statistically, I am likely to work outside of the home.
Statistically, I am likely to live in a city.
Statistically, I am likely to be afraid of spiders, snakes or rodents.
I'm sure given time, I could extend this list greatly. The one thing
that links ALL of the above statements? I'm not any of them. It truly
had never occured to me that any of you would make assumptions about me
based on anything other than what I write, but Betsy's post made me see
exactly what happened. I get it now. Others probably had to work long
and hard to break their 'programming' and become unschoolers and for that
reason they can't see that maybe I come from such a different place that
I didn't need to break mine. I don't think about not using this word or
that expression with my kids because it may mean something different in
another family - like agreement and compromise. Or that I would have to
be careful to make my kids know they are equal partners in this family.
They just are.
I guess in some ways, I made assuptions too. I assumed that you all were
at the same place I am concerning rights, responsibility and respect.
That place does not include using cute names for things that are chores.
That place does not include me giving up my own identity to please my
kids. The respect in this family goes both ways. Maybe part of the
reason is because there are three generations here not just two. That
has had a big effect on how the girls view the mother-daughter
relationship. My mother is one of my best friends and they see that
regularly. They also know that we (mom and I) disagree regularly on many
things but that we still love and respect each other.
Bridget
PS - Betsy - Your post made perfect sense to me and it did really help me
see what happened here in a new light. Thank you very much!!!!

Statistically, I cook and eat three meals a day.
Yeah, Right.
(If a double negative is a positive, a double positive must be a
negative.)
How about:
Statististically, I think ice cream is not a breakfast food.

Dear Tami
I read "ODD" as initials for some sort of disorder
with which I was unfamiliar. Then I recognized it as
the same order we have in my family.
