I finally bought Set after hearing about it here a bunch of times. It is a
blast. I don't think dh and dd are going to sleep tonight :). ~Rue

There's an online sample version, but it's easier. It is smaller and one
element (color) short of the real thing, but for people who want to try it
without buying it, you can. But I've never known anyone who bought it and
regretted it!

Kids learn it easier than adults do, it seems.

It's math/concept without words or numbers. All visual.

Yes, our eight year old picked it up faster than we did, and our four year
old was able to understand it. I'll be looking into their other games. ~Rue

Yes. They have to be the same in some way(s) and equally (equally meaning a
full balance of...) different.

a a a is a set

ab ab ab is a set

a b c is a set

aa ba ca is a set

(This will make NO sense to those who haven't seen the game, and there ARE no
a's or c's anyway...)

When we first got this, Cacie would stay up after I went to bed to play,
and I would hear her little voice every minute or so saying, "Set. Set.
Set." I wonder of there are national Set championships anywhere, like
they do for Scrabble and Go....

Ooooh, we like that too. Right now we're playing a lot of Rummy 500,
which was sort of an outgrowth of 5 Crowns.

I liked Quarto a lot too, although Cacie wasn't quite so keen on it. Our
(used) set was missing two pieces, which we replaced with chess pieces,
so you also had to remember which chess piece represented which quarto
piece...

Holly says:

they all need to be the same but different, like when you're playing with
all of different colors [the card game] they would need to be the same color
but like still all different, like 1 2 3 or if you're playing with all of the
same color [like on the computer] they could be like 1 diamond, 2 squiggles,
and 3 ovals/oblongs

Sandra says:

If two are the same in ANY way they all three need to have that
characteristic. If one is striped, they all have to be. If one is single
they all have to be.

If you have lots of diamonds, for instance, they don't ALL have to be solid,
or hollow, or striped, but either they all have to be the same or they all
have to be different.

No odd man out (no two of one kind and the third different).

I've never played the online version, but often when we teach the card
game to someone new, we take out all of the striped and outline cards and
just show them a demo round with the solids, often tracking 3 attributes
(color, number, and shape) seems much easier for people to catch onto
than tracking 4.

Well, I told my husband to give it a try. I knew that this was right up his
alley...just like his mind works. Also just like my 6 yr old son. So I sat
them down at the computer and got them started.
(my dh can't do anything on the puter)
Of course first try he got it.
Ha, ha
Didn't surprise me a bit.
The two of them with the dd joining in were addicted right away.
Me, and my 8 yr old son, who thinks just like me weren't interested at all.

Makes perfect sense to me, but then the only math I did well at was
symbolic logic.
