wow. I just read the whole thing and I can say I feel less than inspired! It seemed like each time a good point about homeschooling was brought up, the writer had 2 more points that made it seem like maybe not such a good idea. Even on the "How to get started" page, the last paragraph was nothing less than depressing.

The only valid point I saw FOR putting my kids in public education was the line that read "Home schooling is a social threat to public education," says Chris Lubienski, who teaches at Iowa State University's college of education. "It is taking some of the most affluent and articulate parents out of the system. These are the parents who know how to get things done with administrators." That still did not have me setting my alarm to get Jake enrolled first thing in the morning with the rest of middle Tennessee...

All in all, an interesting article. Thanks for sharing the link, I never would have read it otherwise!

What a perverse and annoying article! Definitely the worst major homeschooling article I have read in a long time. Very biased and full of misconceptions.

I'd like to write a rebuttal, but it's hard to decide where to start.

Ever get the feeling that some people just don't "get it"...

The person who wrote that article isn't very intelligent or open to reality.

But that is just my opinion :)

I'm not sure it's worthy of an actual rebuttal but here's what I wrote:

Couldn't TIME find reporters who weren't clearly biased against homeschooling?

This article is laughable.

I accessed this article earlier today and started reading it. The reporter
had made several grammar mistakes and the tone was condescending. I was
unable to finish reading it and tried several times this evening to access
it again and I keep getting error messages" this page cannot be displayed".
Has anyone else had difficulty with it?

I really think it is a case of the ol' subconscious feeling threatened kinda
thing, "if it was good enough for me, why isn't it good enough, blah, blah,
blah." Ya know, kinda like homeschoolers trying to make them feel inferior.

which means, as you say, they just don't get it!

I think the problem is, several people wrote the article, some supporting
and some opposing causing many contradictions.
