When my first son was born my step-father said to my mother "I bet she's not
going to circumsize him either"... My mother's reply was "we are not Jewish
why would she do that?" Before I came to America and as I was growing up I
thought the only boys that were circumsized were Jewish. Even though I still
consider it mutilation (and I understand you are not comfortable with that
word) I can see that people with strong religious beliefs follow the doctrine
of those belief systems.

As an outspoken person, I don't have a problem with the word mutilation. To
me that's what it is, pure and simple. I can't think of a "nice" way to put
cutting off pieces of my son's flesh, while he screams in pain and agony,
strapped to a board, with no mother or father to hold him, in a room full of
strangers. From what I understand the Jewish ceremony is nothing like that,
however there must still be pain involved and I just could not do it.... Just
one person's feelings expressed in this forum....

Dawn,
I'm glad that you didn't take offense at my post. I just wanted to air
another opinion about circumcision.

If you have another son, check the NoCirc site. There are Jews who are using
a less extreme form which keeps the covenant without the aspect whose name
bothered you.

<<I can see that people with strong religious beliefs follow the doctrine

What's being followed is more than doctrine, though--it's tradition which is
more extreme than the Torah technically requires, according to what I've read.

Do you mean the three drops of blood ritual? I didn't realize that people
were doing that to babies too. It makes sense. I knew that it was an option
for an adult convert.
We have twin boys and probably won't have any more children, so I don't have
to think about it anymore, but I'll keep it in mind if any of my friends get
pregnant.

I'm not sure. I read it in passing and remembered to remember it was there,
but deleted the mental details. Sorry.
