Dalene Mactier

Hi All

Just a quick survey

What is your favorite board game and what age is it appropriate for??

I'm looking to get something for my son.

Thanks

I can't stop at just *one*..

For larger groups, lately we like The Great Dalmuti, Apples to Apples,
and Bohnanza... Cacie played all three successfully at 7, although Apples
to Apples requires reading, and it would be hard to adapt for a
non-reader. I've seen some 6 year old kids play these, and one 5 yr old,
but I think most kids under 7 or 8 would be frustrated. I think they are
all labeled 10 and up, or 12 and up, but we don't really pay attention to
this. There is a junior Apples to Apples, with "easier" words, but it
didn't seem nearly as fun.

When it's just the two of us, lately we've been playing Tikal and 5
Crowns.. Tikal says 10+ and Five Crowns says 8+, but take that with a
grain of salt. Tikal is sort of Settler's of Cataan-ish, and 5 Crowns is
a twist on gin rummy. You can also play these with larger groups..

Old favorites (that Cacie was playing by around 5) include Set (and I
swear someone needs to create a World Set Championship, because she would
win), Rat-a-Tat Cat, and Midnight Party (which I think was at one point
called Ghost Party). These can all be played by 2 or more..

A friend of ours just gave us a "cooperative" board game
called "Grandma's House". It's made somewhere in Canada and is a lot
of fun. It's for younger kids - doesn't require reading, but is fun
for adults too. There's only one game piece which you each move on
your turn, and you have to brainstorm solutions together to the
hazards you face along the way. It's nice, and Mackenzie thinks it is
hysterical. He's always coming up with some kind of creative solution
along the way. I think this company makes other cooperative games,
I'll have to see if I can find the info sheet...

Our favorites right now are Quarto and Set. Quarto is a wonderful version
of "4 in a row", but you have wooden pieces with 4 different attributes you
use to get 4 in a row. My 7 year old is very good at this and at Set.
Drives her brothers up the wall actually. <G>

Bazaar is a biggie around here, and has been enjoyed by people from 7
to 63. Set has been a hit with the same mixed ages. Neither is really
a board game though.

I guess our favorite board game would be Monopoly. My kids all learned
to play around 5 or 6, with help on the reading.

We all love Monopoly. There is a Monopoly game for just about everyone--Jr.
Monopoly, Star Wars, NFL, etc., etc., etc. You can even have one done for
your hometown.

Ah! We have this game, which is made by Family Pastimes. (I think). We
also have their Princess game. We found it used, with one little object
card missing, so we made up some of our own cards to add to the game. This
would also work with the Grandma's House game, probably. We now rescue the
princess with helicopters and T-Rexes and dynamite.

a favorite, not the favorite:

Mastermind for Kids

It's cuter than regular Mastermind. Maybe five or six and up (if they like
patterns and puzzles and won't eat the pieces).

By "up" I mean it's not too easy for adults.

Neither takes any reading whatsoever, either, which is cool. Nor is either
simple and childish.

We love Bazaar. It's one of the prettiest games...
The original stones had weak colors and it was hard to tell green from blue.
We've replaced those with brighter-colored stones. And we repainted the gold
and silver sides of the die. We put two cards out instead of one.

Holly liked Set at first but has gotten tired of it. There's an online
version (downloadable).

Hi, Sharon --

I did a websearch and found the answer. The website is, not too
surprisingly <g>

http://www.familypastimes.com

My husband does not recall ever playing this game. It's more fun than,
say, Candyland, but less fun to a guy like him than Nintendo games. (I
realize that doesn't say much.)

Of the Family Pastimes games that we have, the one that I think has the
most male appeal is "Sleeping Grump" in which you climb the beanstalk and
attempt to steal the giant's treasures without waking him up. My son
really enjoyed it when he was 5. (But we chose it because he was really
fond of the beanstalk story.)

Oh, shoot. When I recommended the Sleeping Grump game I forgot to mention
that it's 50% harder to succeed (win) if you are playing with 3 players.
Your odds of waking the giant are proportionally increased with each player
added.

<P> Dear Betsy........Sleeping Grump? Daddy doesn't
like to play anyway.  Just thought we might hook
him.  Oh well.  He does like checkers
OK.  That's a pretty good game, too.  But I
like the fantasy that seems to go with your desciption
of Grandma's House and Princess.  I still
wanna play, too.
<P>From your posts you find lessons everywhere, books,
movies, games. Thanks for sharing you

Dear Betsy.......I wrote the other post before I read this one. Thanks. My son (7) likes Batttleship, Dinosaur Monopoly, Checkers, Sorry, Chess, card games, all very structured. The Grandma's House game sounded more open. Of course, he only has board games that I have purchased.....so I don't REALLY know his taste. Only what I provided. Thanks for the link Sharon

Hey, Sharon --

Yes, the vagueness of what works and doesn't work in the Grandma's House
game can be a source of conflict. My son figures that throwing a rock will
get you past the bear, and small sticks can be used to float you across the
river. I just go along with this, but with anyone who was a stickler for
realism, it might be annoying having it be undefined what object solves
each obstacle. (The Princess game and the Sleeping Grump game are more
straightforward. But I do not insist that you buy them. <g> I found them
at thrift shops which makes my return on investment a lot different than if
I had paid full price.) We've probably only played the Grandma's House
game 10 times.

I think they're games that anyone can enjoy. Because you have to use
your own creativity to play them, they change depending on who is
playing. And more than 2 players can play, you just all work
together.

Hi-
Our favorite board games are Risk and Scrabble. My kids love to play with
the Risk game when they are quite young (3, 4) but they don't use it "as
intended." As they get older, they love to play! We love Scrabble too, but
again, don't often play by the directions.
