It's amazing to me that this kind of thinking is mainstream and that
people who believe kids should be nurtured and protected, allowed to follow
their interests and dreams, are the ones considered radical!

This is one of my main reasons for writing this book. It's time that
the mainstream was proven wrong... maybe many years from now
unschooling will be the norm...

Unfortunately, the mainstream will think Laurie is the exception, not the rule, as it goes. "They" will still believe that structure and discipline is what "most" need and want (tell that to my kid!). It's like the child prodigy. Until there is a mass exodus from the schools and schools-at-home, you won't be able to convince the majority, they are too far gone. And when that happens, there will be tons of "studies" on "how to unschool your child correctly." As you can tell, I'm a bit pessimistic when it comes to the mainstream; they are going to have to see thousands of books/studies about thousands of "Lauries" to be convinced. ambersand

That's why she's got to get some of you to go with her to Oprah. I
would, but my kids are young so they "don't count yet" (my neighbor's
words) and, really, I'm too shy to do any good in that kind of
situation. I nominate Sandra and Helen and ... Sorry, I'm getting
carried away.

I am going to hope for the best. Maybe Laurie's grandchildren will
laugh at all we went through to convince others that unschooling is
the only sane way to raise kids.

I made the point in my book that Yes, Laurie has a high IQ,
BUT...that is not why the unschooling worked so well. Success is not
measured by intelligence, but by a belief in yourself that comes with
self-confidence, self-discipline, and self respect. These things are
available to all kids whose parents nurture these qualities in them.

Your right Ambersand, but the more voices we have, like books, the more clout we have. And I am glad you can write Valerie! You speak for many of us! I can remember hearing about homeschooling in general a loooong time ago, I thought it was for gifted and genius children only, but now it is a huge movement and hopefully, so will unschooling be!
