We've had trouble with this since we first got our computer in Sep 98.
It's an HP Pavillion with an LT Win Modem and at first I got internet service
with a local provider. It was freezing up all the time and HP technical
support said I should try to AOL that came free (for a month) with the
computer because the modem was probably too fast for the local provider. I
did this and it did make a major difference but it still freezes up from time
to time.
This is how I ended up with AOL in the first place. Now I keep thinking
about finding a cheaper local provider but I don't want to have that happen
again. As you might be able to tell, I don't know much about
computers...maybe someone who knows more can give me some advice???

I've had several ISP's, including our local phone co.
and a small local ISP business, and of all six I've
tried, the two I had the most trouble with were a free
one and AOL! Unless your computer is brand new just
as the technology comes out, it is unlikely to be
beyond the capabilities of most ISP's for more than a
month or two... the technologies move fast, and they
have to keep up if they want to survive. Good luck!
