What a subject line!
I heard that computers do better in cool temperatures, since they produce
heat themselves. Servers are kept in temperature and humidity controlled
rooms.

Ok, I asked DH about this and he said and I quote:
"Mac users will tell you PCs run hot, but don't try to
reason with them because they are unreasonable as
evidenced by the fact that they use Macs."

His words, not mine. I don't even know what he means,
but his PC prejudice is showing.

Then he said, "IF your PC runs hot, you should turn it
off. Ours is set to shut down if it gets too hot. They
can tell if theirs runs hot by putting their hands by
the fan in back. The air near it shouldn't be hotter
than body temperature. Like testing a baby bottle on
the wrist."

I said,"These are unschoolers, natural parenting
people, they didn't use bottles." (My children are his
step children, so he hasn't raised a baby.)

Oh, he said, like testing bath water then.

So there you go. The lowdown from a Mac hater, anyway.

Sorry Mac users. I really don't know what he means by
that. I assume there's a mac/pc war going on at work.

LOL -- My dh would spout the same line, if I asked him

But, what makes him love his PC is exactly what makes Mac people think PC's
are terrible. They are like puzzles, you can put them together in a million
different ways. My dh loves puzzles. ;)

the mac/pc war has been gooing on for at least fifteen years. Some swear by one, other bythe other. I have only met a handful of people who used both. Originally macs were better for graphics and pcs had more business applications, but that is no longer true.

LOL! That's an oldie but a goodie. <g>

Seems like it's usually said by someone who's never used a Mac.

We've been using Macs since 1985, when we traded up from our first
KayPro II (anyone remember those?). We use our computers seriously,
sometimes literally running them for months at a time, and dragging
our PowerBooks off into the wilderness with us, horsebackriding,
sailing, 4-wheeling - you name it, we've probably done it with a Mac
or two along!

I like Macs because they're almost foolproof and they *rarely* glitch
up - in over 15 years of running one Mac after another after another
(trading up to keep our hardware state-of-the-art for production
purposes, not because they wore out or anything), the most serious
problem I've run into has been my own dumb fault, and fixing it has
never been more than a restart away. Right now we have six or
seven... I'm not sure because most are over in the office (which I
try to stay out of) and I lost track of how many we have. <g>

Most of the people I know run PCs, so I'm pretty familiar with them -
and even the best ones just sound like one big ongoing headache. I
don't want to rebuild everything once a week or even once a month - I
just want my computer to do what I want it to, when I want it to,
period. Macs do that. I'd never consider using anything else. Nevah!

Well, this time it was said by someone who has
programmed and networked and administrated hundreds,
if not thousands, of macs AND PCs.

But I still don't know the difference. I think macs
are best if you want something simple and trouble-free
while pcs are for more computery people.

But I really have no idea. I'll ask him why he said
that, since it's still being discussed. He will
probably be embarrassed that I repeated it, because he
wouldn't have wanted to offend anyone. Juli

Switched to a Mac IIsi which is still operational, but not jazzy.

That's o.k., tell him to sit with 2 PCs and call us in the morning <g>

The old Mac vs. PC war has been going on for as long as I can remember!
Personally, I don't like Macs and I hate Windows because it is nothing but
Apple wannabee stuff and if I wanted that I would buy that!

Now, I love GTOs and the 400 that ran in them. They run "hot" and that's
just the way they are. So, I never thought I would upset a fellow PC user
by saying that PCs run hot. I mean, it isn't really a "bad" thing, just the
way they are. Guess I'll have to let the kidlets in on this discussion and
they'll run and do some tests <g>

We will interrupt your regular programing when they find some Macs to test.
We only have PCs here. Hmmmm, wonder which friend they are going to bug
this week <<<bewg>>>

kaypro's? LOL....my dad had one that he used that belonged to the Ham radio club for years as their treasurer...he doesn't have one now, but he now has an up to date PC which is much better than mine.  I remember when I was a wee girl that Dad was into computers even back then and the kaypro was what he used. I myself started out with a 8088...an old dinosaur...one up from the 8082 or something like that. Slowly moved up to a 286, 386, 486, and finally a pentium that is already a dinosaur in computereze world...and all this over ten years time. I cannot afford to have more than one computer at a time :(

Next time you drive down this way, Helen, there is a computer store on the
main freeway/street through town that has a display of all the dinoseurs,
including the KayPro. I took the kidlets there not too long ago and they
didn't believe me that that is what the computers use to look like.

Mac's vs PC's:

It's a right brain/left brain thing. Maybe. :)

In general:

LEFT BRAIN RIGHT BRAIN
Logical Random
Sequential Intuitive

Rational Holistic
Analyzes Synthesizes
Objective Subjective
Parts Wholes

Most individuals have a distinct preference for one of these styles of
thinking; some are more "whole brained' and are equally adept at both modes.
In general, schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking, while
down-playing right-brain modes. Left brain subjects focus on logical
thinking, analysis and accuracy. Right-brained subjects focus on aesthetics,
feeling, and creativity.

(From a website about brain hemisphere dominance.)

Laura (Sometimes I fear there is empty space where my "left brain" should be.
Thank goodness my husband and I have one whole brain between the two of us.)

[email protected]

I have heard that Apple sells them dirt cheap to the schools but then charges a
lot for software and repairs, etc. They get the teachers to use them and the
students, but when they all get to the real world, they have to learn to us
PC's anyway because most businesses use PC's. I don't know how much trueth
there is in this, but it is what I have heard from PC users.

Funny... we've heard the same thing from Mac users about PCs, that
some of the PC companies have dumped them on schools as tax writeoffs
when they couldn't sell them to real people, etc.

differ'nt strokes for differ'nt folks type of thing. Like some people

Then they'd really be amazed at the ones I grew up with - they were
room-sized monsters that made an awful whirring and buzzing racket
while lights flashed and blinked. I remember my Dad programming a
computer to spit out punchcards that when read sequentially said
"Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" and we were all just terribly
impressed that he could do that!

The other night Dad sent me a cyber-rose all the way from Alaska:

@--`;--- (or something like that...)

and he and my brothers are always sending us their latest technogeek

What a long strange trip it's been... <g>

So... um.... Mac-users are Rightbrained, right? <g>

Helen, who is *anything* but logical or sequential...

One of our computer whizzes use to work for Apple and he said that giving
the computers really cheap to schools was written off as a tax deduction
under charity and advertising. They figured that all the kids would bug
their parents to buy them Apples/Macs because that is what they were using
in school.

One of our computer whizzes use to work for Apple and he said that giving
the computers really cheap to schools was written off as a tax deduction
under charity and advertising.  They figured that all the kids would bug
their parents to buy them Apples/Macs because that is what they were using
in school.

I've been away from the graphic art field for about ten years now. We all had
Mac's in the art dept. when I was there. Do ANY art departments use anything
but Mac's now? (I mean, I'm asking, I don't know.)

Is this the question that will polarize human society and lead ultimately to
apocalypse? Mac or PC?

The question to ask at parties, instead of "What do you do?" "Mac or PC?"
"Oh, you're one of us, then." :)

We have both in our household and the children and I for that matter prefer the Mac because of its ease of use (not as many error mesages or bombing ). We make sure we expose the children to both so they understand how they differ (not much anymore in terms of the user interface - but that's because the Mac interface was copied :) ) and how they are similar and DH (who is a computer geek programmer with the whole house networked - and who likes the Mac better than PC's) makes sure that the children understand the inner workings of both (he gave up on me though <BIG GRIN>). Both seem to work for us in our household of too many computers!

the mac/pc war has been gooing on for at least fifteen years. Some swear by one, other bythe other. I have only met a handful of people who used both. Originally macs were better for graphics and pcs had more business applications, but that is no longer true.

Oh, I'm not offended at all, Juli! I figure it's just one of those
differ'nt strokes for differ'nt folks type of thing. Like some people
prefer to drive cars and others (like me) prefer pickup trucks. <g>

i think schools would prefer macs since my kids have been on them from teh
time they could crawl into the chair and never harmed the machine or the
software. Can't say that about our PC

Oh, true!!!

My kids have used our computers for baby games with never a problem, but we
got a housemate with a PC and she is often complaining that the kids messed
up this or that.
