Well, this is the year. I have always wanted to make one of those lamb
cakes for easter. You know the kind that is a lamb upright? Sort of
lying down though. The recipe that came with the pan is a pound cake,
which isn't my favorite.... I figure if I'm going to go to all the
trouble the cake should be really yummy!!!
Does anyone have a good recipe for this type of molded cake? I don't
know if I can just use any cake recipe or not. ??

The pound cake was probably used for its density and stability so look for a dense fudge cake, LOL....
Any dense cake should work.
Best of luck

I like this one better (I think the Lamb cake has always been on the ugly side)
http://www.wilton.com/ri/Easter/landing.htm
as long as you have a little imagination, you can form a cake into any shape you
want

Nanci and Thomas Kuykendall

We don't celebrate easter, but we do celebrate the Spring equinox. I like just a plain ol egg shape. Speaks volumes to me about the rebirth of spring, and in easy to make and fun to decorate.

You'd have to use your imagination AFTER I formed the cake!

Michaelangelo had imagination but he could also sculpt. It's a skill beyond
imagnining what it would look like (and I don't have that skill! <G>)

I have a theory about cakes being sacrifices--cut by the honoree, shared
among all the "celebrants," excess saved in special ways. Candles make it a
burnt offering. But shaping a cake like a lamb at Easter is the biggest
piece of evidence of all that cakes, in our culture, are the last vestige of
sacrificing animals ceremoniously.

This made me think of "Steel Magnolias" and the armadillo groom's cake.
Perhaps we should make all of our "sacrificial" cakes with red velvet
cake so the image of sacrifice is tangible.

I see cakes as pure sharing of carbohydrate addiction but this comes from
the mind of a hypoglycemic. LOL When I read your post I thought, "No,
it's more like breaking bread." then "Ohhhhhhh, yeah."

Rectangles.  That's all you're getting out of my kitchen.  And, yes, it's a
mix.  And be happy it's not just from the bakery.  (Although that might be
much better ..  . .)

I'm in awe of all the talent flying around here.

We're planning on doing a bunny rabbit made from 2 round cakes. You leave one cake as is, use the other to cut out 2 ears and a bowtie.

Nance, don't feel bad.... I am a totally untalented baker, except for bread (which is very different from cakes)  I can't wait to make this lamb cake.  I think I'm going to make a red velvet cake...(Yes, I saw the discussion on this, but after I decided on making it this way)(I did not, however, decide to do this for the yucky morbid, gross part...though I'm sure the kids will love it!)  I sure hope it turns out!  I may have to have a backup dessert for Easter dinner though...maybe not...we are making homemade ice cream the next night....
Thanks to everyone for all of their suggestions...

You crack me up Nance! It's a talent and a skill in itself (which is woefully lacking in many people) to be able to be so honest and forthright. I salute you, and your rectangular mix cakes.
