My mom used to take me camping in the redwoods, now THAT is a forest. I'm
not sure how it is now but back then contact with bears was a daily
occurrence. The campgrounds provided food lockers and all of the trash cans
were bear proof.

Still the same Kris. We even get them wandering through town every now and
again.

That's reassuring, wildlife is always a good sign I think. We had a deer
make a daily morning run through our green space last year. Mind you, we
aren't in a rural area but there must enough space to keep a few deer going.
Alas, I think the dogs (who are supposed to be leashed at all times) and kids
have scared her off for good. She looked so big and majestic sauntering past
my living room window, the kids and I would watch hardly breathing.

You guys are making me homesick! I used to live (before kids) in Guerneville
and would walk or ride my bike under the redwoods in Armstrong Woods.. I
lived (and worked) in Healdsburg for a short while too...

Sigh!

McCool Family

Thanks for mentioning Armstrong Grove (Woods). This brings back such
fond memories for me too from my teen years spent along the Russian
River.Such a pretty place.

We have a Colonel Armstrong "baby" redwood that we snagged a few years ago
when we took the kidlets to Armstrong Grove.

For those that don't know how redwoods propogate, they use two methods,
seeds and by "suckers." Growing by seeds only has a 10-20% success rate.
We took one of the suckers off the Colonel Armstrong tree. It is now about
5' tall.
