Here's a tidbit I learned the other day.  If you take your game to a butcher to have it packaged, be sure to verify that you will get YOUR meat in return.  Some butchers do several animals all together, then package them and portion them out.  For 'real' hunters that is a significant thing!  Hunters are careful to not let the animal run too long and to get a clean shot, for instance, because it affects the flavor of the meat.  To get someone else's meat could be a real let down!  Makes it kinda hard to know for sure how dinner will taste.  Steaks will be great one night and gamy or tough the next cause they are not from the same animal.

DH is really looking forward to hunting this season.  It's the first time in over 15 years he'll be able to go.  We move too much and he usually either hasn't had vacation time available or residence status (it costs MUCH more for license if you're not a state resident).

We use what we kill, that includes rabbits or squirrel.  (FWIW, squirrel tastes okay, but there are so many bones, it's not worth it, IMO.)  DS (12) is going this year, too.  It'll be his first time.  As a mommy, I'm nervous about it, but I'm also impressed with the advance preparations the two of them are making.  Target practice, learning about the gun, taking a gun safety course, etc.

Just thought I'd share,

Do Americans habitually carry them around or kepp them locked up?
I might learn to shoot (I do archery already) but wont be allowed to

As a matter of interest, do all american's 'hunt' ie. Go out and shoot
food or non-food animals? Why?

Oh, I missed the EASY questions.

People do initial cleaning out where they're hunting.

Then, generally, the animal is taken to a butcher, packaged up and picked up
all marked in white paper packages.  Sometimes the butcher works in exchange
for a portion of the meat.

Eiraul,

If you find this happens to you (or anyone you know), you should turn them in to the DOA as it is illegal.  Each animal is suppose to be done individually and then all surfaces cleaned before the next animal is done on uninspected animals.

You pay plenty to have game animals done, the least they can do is make sure you get what you bring in!

THANK YOU!  I'll be passing this info on to the person who was personally involved.  I suspect a local butcher won't be too happy to be reminded of this.

It really ticks me off when stuff like this happens as it makes all the folks that do custom cutting and wrapping look bad.  It also is dangerous!  With elk, deer and moose coming out of a couple of states having the relative disease to BSE, no one should be exposed to even a vague possibility of getting this!

It postively amazed me to see that some hunters didn't seem to care that the critters they shot had the wasting disease and were going to go ahead and eat them anyway!
