Nance said "Vacuuming and laundry just aren't that exciting. "
But vaccuming and laundry can be exciting in an unschooling family <g>  (Said in an "ah come on, sure it can" jovial tone of keyboard as dh does the vacuuming and she wonders if disposable clothing might be in the future) I've used them to bring about great conversations (Egyptian cotton vs. regular old cotton; thread counts and what they mean; to bleach or not to bleach; energy consumption/use; dyes) and, ok, so we left them in a heap in the middle of the floor every now and again, they can lead many places (we planned a trip to the wool mills in Oregon; we grew some cotton; we built a mini-cotton gin).  And that is what unschooling is really all about--life and a joy in discovery which leads to learning.
IMHO, more newbies would be "turned on" to unschooling if these threads we pluck from everyday life and follow to an interesting end were shared.

Vacuuming and laundry just aren't that exciting.

Anyway, I think you are a source of information but come on a little too
heavy-handed for my taste, especially to newbies who may actully need some
comfirmation, even if you don't whole-heartedly agree with all they are
doing, as they try to wend their way to being full-fledged (or not)
unschoolers.

But, that's just me.   I wouldn't dream of telling you how to unschool or how
to think or or of suggesting what you need to know.

Happy unschooling!

Maybe they would be "turned on" and maybe they wouldn't. After all when I
shared that we are raising dogs (and it has turned out to be an incredible
learning journey for my family) I was quickly criticized. It is hard to want
to share what we are doing in our unschooling families when we are judged
unfairly for what we are doing. I will stand up and defend what I believe in
and am doing but sometimes I wish people were not so quick to judge.

Aauuggghhhh!!  Maybe it's not such a good idea to teach him these things --
step away from the dryer -- back, back!!

You know, Lynda, I just lost all of the stuff I had input to my Quicken files
for taxes -- I don't need any more headaches!  :)

Hi all!
I know you're about to think I'm a total nut, but I
devised a way to motivate me to keep up on my laundry.
I keep a bag of hershey kisses in my laundry room.
Every time I put a load in or take one out, I reward
myself with chocolate. Yes, it goes against some
unschooling ideas(ie, no rewards!), but to me, its a
perfect set up. The laundry gets done and I get
chocolate. What could be better?
Kerry

That's the best idea I've heard in a long time!

Thanks,

Kerry,

File it under math (counting <g>, one HK, one load of laundry), ratios (one
to one), practicing eye hand coordination. You don't have to file it under
rewards <g>

It doesn't make any sense if I don't actually type something, does it?? :)

Anyway, you ladies have given me a wicked idea.  If any of you remember the
show Sanford & Son, you get an idea of how my backyard looks some times.  My
husband is a tile/marble contractor.  When the rich people he does work for
redo a bath, they don't keep the stuff that works, they change it to another
shade of off-white.  So, my husband's trait of being a packrat goes crazy.
(He inherited this from his mother and apparently there is no cure!  Nagging
gets some of it to disappear but more comes back.)

So, right now I have a dishwasher, 5 (count em) "too expensive to throw out"
toilets (I kid you not!), a bathtub and assorted wood, tile and marble in the
backyard.  Oh, and TVs -- there are probably about 3 extras floating around
here now -- the latest homeowner he worked for wanted to upgrade from the
Mitsubishis he had to a better model of Mitsubishi -- it never ends.

So I am thinking -- and I will blame it all on you guys -- some of this stuff
will become hsing projects -- what is inside a dishwasher anyway?!

(To give the devil his due, dh has not had any time off to cart any of this
stuff away but a long weekend has been promised "soon" so we will see . . .)

Nance (wondering why I didn't think of this sooner!)

Maybe parts that be sold on e-Bay.
Mine has a garbage disposal kind of thing, and a water heating coil
somewhere, and filters, and there must be some nylon bearings or something to
help the water-sprayer things spin freely. But my kids don't know that. I
should convince Marty that he cares what's inside a dishwasher, because
they're expensive to get fixed!

Nance, how old are your kidlets?  When we remodeled our house we let the kidlets run their own yard sale.  They put an ad in the free paper and the local do-it-yourselfers came out in droves!  They made over $300!

Hi, I'm Bobbie, and I'm a packrat.
No, there isn't a cure. Sorry. <g>
Junk yards are so exciting to me. who knows.
ANyway, thought I'd share something. My family (dad,
sis, bros, uncle) are notorious for being packrats
with cars. Always a couple beat up or broken down cars
hanging around being worked on or waiting to be worked
on cuz it's a shame to just get rid of them. :)
My ex-sil and I were at one time going to use one of
them (we were think an old milk truck or bus or
something like that) and some of the many appliances
laying around one of the family's yards and all such
things readily available to us to build a really
awesome-nova playhouse. taking out all the parts we
thought to be dangerous...leaving in the steering
wheel and driver's seat, of course....taking out the
engine and planting edible, non-toxic, kid friendly
plants and flowers where the hood was....lettting the
kids paint it (with us, so we don't miss out on the
fun)...maybe eventually build off the side of the
vehicle to make a bit more room...or attaching some of
the aforementioned appliances to it...taking out
dangerous parts, agian, and planting things in on and
around them...the ideas never stopped....make the
inside like a regular playhouse...maybe...hanging
curtains over the windows......etc, etc,
etc...........

Well, it takes all kinds.  But I think this should have been more clearly
marked on my husband's packaging!  :)

Your car/clubhouse/?? idea sounds pretty cool though.

I better delete this quickly before too many good ideas escape and the kids
start dismantling and building.

They have already "borrowed" some of Dad's wood scrap and added substantially
to their clubhouse.  Which is really a big sandbox with a second story.  Now
it has ramps and bridges, etc.  And many buckets.  And a tent.  And a hose.

Maybe I am completely losing control around here.  Maybe I never had control!
 :)

Nance  (gotta go because I just heard a big boom and the kids adn the
neighbor are out playing flashlight basketball!)

Do you watch junkyard wars? My packrat kidlets are in love with it and want
to apply to go on the show.

We had a local team on it a couple of weeks ago who made it to the finals.  The kidlets were glued!!!! to the tv because they "knew" two of the folks in the team--local artists whose art is on display nationally.  Now they really have the bug.

I don't but my dh and son do.  No surprise there!

They say it is a pretty good show.

Go to San Francisco, turn north, depending on who's driving (me or dh) it is
between 4.5 and 6 hours. The truffles and laundry are waiting <<<BEWG>>>

They turn two teams (3 players and 1 added expert in subject area) loose in
a junkyard with a specific project--build a race car, build a boat, build a
catapult, etc.

They have a day or two to build this "thing." When the time runs out there
is a test to see how well they did--a race, a competition, throwing
distance, etc.

They have even had to build airplanes and submarines.

it's self-training, in time you might feel happy to do
without the choccies, specially if you start spreading
them out or 'rewarding' yourself randomly. Maybe it's
less of a reward than a positive reinforcement...

Tracy

Kerry,

File it under math (counting <g>, one HK, one load of
laundry), ratios (one
to one), practicing eye hand coordination. You don't
have to file it under
rewards <g>
