I don't agree with that. Jesus is THE son of God and the Christ. The
original Hebrew tells us that Jesus is the son of God, not just a son of
God. As for interpertation, I am a Babtist and I take the Bible literally.
This is the first thing I've said on this list that will probably make
someone mad or at least irritated with me, but I am not going to conceal my
faith to avoid upsetting someone. That's the least of my worries. -Ren

true translation

The other day I was reading something about (don't even start) John Ashcroft
and deep in some discussion about talking in tongues, etc., it translated the
same phrase 4 different ways.

Nicoletta Manns

<As for Jesus. My entire family sees him as a great teacher. My husband
sees him as a shaman. My children see him much the same way I do. A
great man who lived long ago who came to teach us much. Much like your
friend I see Jesus as a great prophet but not the son of God. >

I went to a United Church for a while and learned during one of the sermons
that the true translation of the original Bible text about Jesus was
supposed to have been that he was "A" son of God NOT "THE" son of God. It
meant a lot to me to hear that and I am choosing to believe it. Who knows
how many more mistakes were made during the translation process, plus
everything is open to interpretation.

I'm wondering if this is a productive subject for this list. We are obviously
have a wide range of religious beliefs while we are all unschoolers. I don't
generally like restrictions but I think we should probably drop this subject,
particularly the part about Jesus. I doubt we'll ever agree.

Wise idea.

I think we can all learn so much more by not agreeing than agreeing. I
wanted to thank everyone for their informative answers. They really helped
me understand where your coming from. I feel that only by exploring all
things can we find the truth. Isn't that what unschooling is all about?

That's why I get a little perplexed when people choose to take the bible
literally word for word, and then take those words out of context. It's a
written account of people many years ago, not the direct voice of god. And
it has been translated many many times.

I don't know the source of this information- but I was told that the
original word for virgin in the context of The Virgin Mary, meant young
girl, not our meaning of the word virgin.

I believe in God, and I believe that he speaks directly to our hearts.

April

Ditto for me.  This isnt a place we need to go on this list.  Let's celebrate
our sameness - homeschooling/unschooling.

I like to celebrate everyone's differences as well, for that is what makes us
human, however, as mentioned, this list isn't for this type of debate.

Agreed. I was asked what Pagan's believe and just stating my own personal
families beliefs with no disrespect meant towards anyone else's.

It seems good-natured and informative atm. I'm sure
we've learnt from previous discussions about thorny
subjects not to get or take things too personal :-) I
for one am not interested, but please don't let that
stop those of you who are have a meaningful and
productive discussion *grin*
