Susan (mother to 5 in Fla)

When I was growing up my folks had a rainbow & it was great.  But that's a fewwww years ago.

We're also in need of a replacement vac.  Something I notices with the uprights (which dh thinks works best) is that you can't use all of them on non-carpet surfaces.  Some do not allow you to turn off the beater to go to hard surfaces which will cause the dust bunnies to multiply & fly.

We currently have a cannister.  Between it & all the attachments it needs space.  I've found I can't have my kids (2-8) do the cleaning because they aren't able to keep the cannister up to their work area as they progress.

Just some thoughts.

KWille

I love my Sears Kenmore cannister vac and when I stand
it up on end it takes hardly more space than an
upright - and I can say that it definatly cleans
better and more surfaces than an upright. I'm in an
Apt. and don't have much space to spare either but I
would never trade the versatility of a good cannister
for another upright. My vac. has a six foot hose (most
don't) which comes in handy when doing stairs and
getting the cobwebs off the ceiling and walls and all
attatchments are stored inside the cannister. Got mine
in 1998 for $300 with part of our wedding gift money
and I'm so pleased with it - I still tell my husband
how much I like it whenever I use it! ;-)
Good Luck!

Ok, I have HAD it with my vaccuum cleaner!

I am down right disgusted with it.  I need a new one.

There is a used vac place that sells re-furbished kirby's, rainbows, electrolux.  Price range is from 250-400.

Anyone have any advice?  I have a medium thickness (shag??) rug, and lineoleum and tile floors.  I also have no storage space so a cannister is going to be hard to put anywhere, but if it really is the best, I'll try.

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] vaccuum cleaners My advice it to go to Walmart and buy the 69.99 vacum by Ureka, Singer or such. Those others are only expensive. You can buy 4 for the price of one of the other's and you don't know if they will last!
Rainbows are too much trouble to get out and do a quick once over.  Kirbys are ok but trouble too.
Don't buy a Black and Decker- I have seen too many of them at the service desk at Walmart.
My 2 cents. Carol in NC

I've seen the rainbow vac, I was impressed, especially with the idea
of using water to clean the air. But sooooo expensive! and a lot of
bits. I probably wouldn't use the main 'beater' attachment. I
currently have a hoover wet'n'dry type, the canister (us Brits call
them cylinder-vacs) is quite light, and I can't vac up without
someone asking me for a turn! I love the manouverability of this
vac, it can reach all over, though I know the new uprights with the
integral hoses are better than my mum's old hoover where you had
to take the front off... The other thing I like is that the muck doesn't
go anywhere near the motor, useful as I and one daughter have
long hair, I would be constantly unwinding it from the drum-brush
and belt.

Now, unshcooling, I guess this would come under the topic of
'home-economics?' LOL

Now that I've read the original question *grin* I'll add to my previous
post, that there are some neat little compact cylinder vacs around
now, and since most uprights come with hose and tools, I don't
think a cylinder would actually take up more space. JMO, of
course :-)

We have an used Rainbow that I love, love, love! It's so much nicer than the
old upright we were using. Of course it's rather expensive but definitely
worth it when I see all of the dirt and dog hair that gets trapped in the
water.

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] vaccuum cleaners I have to agree that Rainbows are a bit of trouble to get out and set up but definitely worth it IMO. We had one of those 69.99 Eurekas from Wal-Mart before, and I'm glad we made the switch. Of course we have a dog and the Eureka picked up very little dog hair compared with the Rainbow, so that's one reason we like it. And of course if you're dealing with lots of allergies, the Rainbow is a great way to help out that problem. Gee, now I'm sounding like a vacuum salesperson. Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a sales pitch. LOL!

We have one we bought reconditioned. With appliances I've found reconditioned
ones to be better than just "used." The current vacuum is an upright and cost
about $30.

Oh Gee...My advice is completely opposite here:

<< My advice it to go to Walmart and buy the 69.99 vacum by Ureka, Singer or

Several years ago my hubby and I bought three vacs like those described above
in about two years and I finally said...that's it, I'm going to pay more and
get a good one. I bought a Panasonic for about $225 and it has been well
worth it. We've had it now for eight years and it is still going strong. My
Mom has an Oreck 8 pounder (also expensive), but it is amazing. That's where
I would go if I were looking for a vacuum now. Sometimes I think it just
pays to buy quality. Look into warranties, too. My Panasonic had a 15 year
replacement warranty. Of course, I do a lot of vacuuming because we have 7
kids, a dog and a cat, plus lots of dirt! Just my opinion...

Have A Nice Day!

I agree with you.  We've been through SEVERAL of the "walmart" less than $100 vacs.  They are just not worth it to me...they don't last with heavy usage at all...at least that has been my experience.  I'm ready to fork out more money if it means good performance and endurance.

PS to my earlier posts, a cylinder vac with a
telescopic handle would be my choice, the Dyson Dual
Cyclone one's good, funky colours, too :-) That way,
even my 4yo can vac up. Don't think she'd manage so
well with an upright...

I love my old Kirby and my newish Rainbow!  The rainbow cuts dust down to nothing and REALLY picks up the dirt!  We use the Kirby during the week and on week-ends do the "deep" cleaning with the Rainbow.

Susan (mother to 5 in Fla)

Ok we did it, the big purchase...  We selected a Kenmore bagless that would also do hard floors.  I thought the place was pretty clean except for the newly deposited dog hairs.  Well I was wrong.  Not having to pull out all the pieces for our old Zak cannister & drag it through the house was a relief.  I may even find I can clean more frequently than just before company.  (not really)  We did the WHOLE house in much less time & had to empty the container 3 times.  It really made this old carpet look much better.  If only it had sucked up the stains around the high chair.  Guess you can't have everything.

Anyway the system was $260 at Sears but was on sell for $199.  Hopefully it will hold up for years to come.

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] vaccuum cleaners That's great, Susan! Sounds as if you got a terrific vacuum cleaner.

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] vaccuum cleaners
Amy this morning my dh woke to find the house clean & in order.  I did major cleaning, except in the bedrooms.  Mostly it was my homeschool stuff growing, as usual, over any flat surface.  But for now it's organized.  DH said if he'd known the new vacuum would put me into Spring cleaning in Jan he'd done it sooner.  Now to keep the kids on task with replacing as they finish with their toys.  Well I can dream....

Re: [Unschooling-dotcom] vaccuum cleaners Hee, hee. That reminds me, Susan, of what my husband said after we purchased our rainbow almost a year ago. He said he'd be vacuuming much more often. Sure. I think he's used the vacuum a total of half a dozen times. I guess I'll let it go, though, since he always loads the dishwasher :).
