Re: [Unschooling-dotcom]cats

Thanks for that, Bonnie.
My 15 year old neutered male is peeing all over the house too...has for
the last 8 years or more. He's on a special diet for the crystals in
his urinary tract, but if anyone had ideas on how to manage the unruly
peeing/spraying I'm all ears...Please help! We seem to have tried
everything we can think of. Our two cats each have their own box and
we've even tried different "styles" to see if a different box would help
him. It hasn't. Different litters haven't helped either. (Did I
mention how ultra- intelligent our cat is? He does tricks! Will sit
and shake his paw or will jump over a stick on command...we've been
meaning to get him on David Letterman or something!)
I apologize to those who will lament this is "not an unschooling issue",
but since my family is an unschooling family we are here to learn (all
things).

One of the problems with spraying is that even though we humans think
(operative word here) that the smell is gone, it isn't to the cats. If you
sliver Dial soap in a jar of water and let it soak until it can be made
into a liquid soap, it is the best thing for removing smells! We used it
in the kennel and it stopped the "repeaters."
One way to cure spraying to to get one of those high powered squirt guns
and wait and watch. When you catch the culprit, squit him (cats HATE this)
and holler really loud, using your most alpha mommy voice "NO!" Usually a
few times and you have a cure. Of course, I've never used this on an older
cat that is set in their ways but it has worked really well with younger
cats. Works good for scratching furniture also.

DIAL soap, before!

Oh, I forgot to mention in my previous post that we don't have a
litter tray, just a cat-flap and some cheesed off neighbours, but
hey, they'll live. When we did have a litter-tray, we found that
Arnie kicked all the cat-lit out, so we really needed one with a top,
for privacy, too. We had more of a problem with Tribble's talent
for hunting. But I digress, as usual.
