Michelle, I'm still new to the group business... what does OT mean? Also I
belong to a different kind of egroup and it's moderated and we seem to talk
about only the stuff to do with the group.

Well if you truly want to be democratic: Those who are interested in shouldering the responsibility ahould let it be known that they are interested. They should preferrably be folks who know the list, know the list community and that post enough that we know them somewhat.

Then...we VOTE! We just have to devise the best system for voting.

Also we may want to vote and put together a set of rules for the list. I think they should be simple and brief, as few as possible to keep our goals.

I would agree, but offered my suggestions for how to choose a moderator, should the general concensus be to elect one.

I agree. Having people moderate lists does help the heated conversations. I am list mamma of another list and the conversations are much calmer. I must say though, we do not only talk about hsing. We do talk about parenting issues and vegetarianism and other such things. I have often thoyght this list could use a moderator, but how do you decide out of 300 + members who gets to be it? That's a toughie.

you know on the other lists, it works really well with a list Mamma....she kind of politely takes the responsibility of shoooing off the raving attitudes, and asking people to clearly mark OT..OT's......and makes short sweet comments to bring us back to our focus..thing is here....we have hundreds of Mammas, and Pappas, and we all feel the need to reply, and give our opinions on certain things that go on....If we could agree on a general etiquette, much like a moderated list, and elect a list Mamma, someone who is willing to moderate us...it may be helpful in keeping the flow , flowing .  Just an idea.   Michelle*

I respectfully disagree. I don't think we need a moderator. We need to
behave politely with one another and let topics die when it is time and
exercise some judgement about what should be discussed between polite and
civilized adults.

I think we can handle it.

I would prefer not to have a moderator. I agree with Nance that we don't
really need one. We have seemed to resolve most issues peacefully.

According to the details on one-list / e-groups, the list owner is Helen Hegener, and the 'moderator' of this unmoderated list ???? is Lisa Bugg. Perhaps we should consult them before holding an election? Personally, I am against having a
moderated list.

Helen and Lisa, where are you?

I'm here finally!! Due to viruses picked up over the last couple of months
I had to do the dreaded *wipe the hard drive* over last weekend. I ended up
not being able to access my mailbox until late today. :)

As the listed *moderator* for the list it's my job to help folks
subscribe/unsubsribe. Every so often we have a case where the commands don't
work. I help make sure questions get answered and generally stay ouf of the
way. :)

As to moderate this list for on topic/off topic posts, we've found that
doesn't work very well. By our very nature we tend to be folks interested in
a myraid of topics. I've never seen a truly heated flame war on this list.
It could be that I've been on the net so long that I remember the flame wars
we used to have and I haven't seen those in years.

I still have 150 or so messages to read. Once I read everything I might
have a better idea of what's up.

I'm with Nance-I was on a moderated list once, and it really was
censorship-they would delete things from peoples post, and add on comments
at the bottom. We are adults, we do not need a Mommy around telling us what
we can say and not say.

I'm on another list where ther's a 'list mother,' she acts less as
moderator in that she doesn't look at every post that comes
through, (ack! can anyone imagine that here?!) just that you
know that when someone gets out of hand, instead of several
people getting agitated and letting everyone know, it's their job to
politely let folk know when they're getting out of line. Just cuts
down on antagonistic list-traffic, IMO. Great idea, now am I
putting myself forward? hmmm.... I dunno... I'll think on it...

I agree with you Tracy. The list that I moderate that is my job. I would
never think of "editing" people's posts by cutting and pasting, etc. I'm
fairly new to the position, but the mamma who preceded me only had to step
forward twice during her reign. She just politely reminded people that their
conversations were getting heated and to either change tone or move off
list. She also did a great job at "talking" out both sides of the arguments
as to make sure they knew she wasn't being one sided. I'm sure more lists
are moderated than not. I think we're in the minority here. BTW Tracy, I
think you'd be great. :)
