Sandra,

My first thought was that it was related to the surprise lilies we have here
in Ohio, although ours are usually a nice soft pink. They are also known as
naked ladies because the greenery grows and then dies back in the spring.
The flowers come up all alone in late summer or early fall. Check this out:
