Someone sent this web site to me and I just wanted to let everyone know
about it. It is a web site where you play 20 questions with a computer. My
kids were amazed how many of their thoughts it got right. Every time someone
plays the game the computer "learns" more.
It could start up conversations about artificial intelligence, programing,
learning in general. www.20q.net

The first computer game I ever played, in 1972 or 73, was one of those, on
the mainframe computer (all there was in those days, punch cards for
programming) at the University of New Mexico. There were so few people playing on the
computer (and one of the least of them, I always was tagging along with a
smarter, mathier friend) that we could tell whose some of the "answers" (new
questions) were.

It's an ancient and honorable computer program (about as ancient as they can
be <bwg>).

This was cool.
It got "balloon" in 20 Q exactly.
I thought I had won.<g>

Marty and I were commenting on the "cheating" of it having so many options

But when people play in person they indicate by hesitation and facial clues
when they aren't sure, or it's maybe, or they can't decide.

Even with all those options (or maybe because of them) I still found I was
hesitating and deliberating - is it "sometimes" or "partly" or "maybe"???

It got my balloon too. I confounded it with yo-yo, but I ended up feeling
like I had answered some of the questions wrong in its universe - confusion
over flexibility - after all the string part can bend even if the rest
doesn't.

-------------

I wanted a "Usually" or "Mostly" option.

It guessed roadrunner in 16 questions and tumbleweed in 28. After tumbleweed it said that I won, but it did guess it eventually.

I won! My thing was "pewter" and it turned out that it wasn't in its
knowledge base. It guessed all kinds of things though, from silver to onyx.
