I received Dayna Martin's new book in the mail yesterday and finished it this evening, it is fantastic! It was honest, straightforward and connected with what I have been trying to do/change regarding my parenting these past few months. It seems like everything is starting to fall into place and make sense. I suggested to my dh that he read it.

Take care,
Jen

What is the name of the book? I take it it is about unschooling?

Thanks!

Amazon is great for books because they have seller who have used books. I've never been disappointed.

I have not read Dayna's book and I love her and think it is probably great but if you can't afford it you can just read Joyce's site and Sandra Dodd's site and they have a LOT if not everything you need.
Not that you should not ge it. But I know what it is to be on a budget.

I really love Rue Kream's book, Raising A Free Child. It is
insxpensive. It is in a very readable. Question and answer format. It
is the book I always recommend to friends to read when discovering
unschooling.

I second that recommendation. Very easy to read and you can pick up or leave off anywhere in the book, as you choose. Great for "strewing" for those reluctant partners too.:)

I third the recommendation for working dads who are busy. It's a good straightforward read. :-)

You know, I thought it would be but, while it helped my dh to understand a bit better, he said it was too "utopian" or "perfect", like it wasn't real!

One of the things "I" love about Rue's book is that it is very
down-to-earth and practical - it is simple and straightforward and an
excellent description of real honest-to-goodness interactions between
parents and children. I always hear Rue's own gentle and clear voice
very clearly when I read it. It describes my own family's reality very
very accurately. And it doesn't rely on any kind of belief system or
other philosophy or anything - it is just so simple and concrete.
Doesn't seem pie-in-the-sky or anything like that, to me, at all.

But, there have been occasions where I have found myself defending
Rue's book like this:

"No, really. Seriously. It is true. ALL true. I KNOW them personally and
I know lots of other people who live the same way. MY family lives the
same way. No, really. Seriously. It is true....".

Yeah, it really is true, but the best part of its being true is that
they're also wonderfully quirky and weird (I consider this a VERY high
compliment.) and normal (well, normally weird.). I mean...have you MET Jon Kream? If
not, you should.

LOL yeah, the first time I met Jon Kream, he was oh-so-seriously (not) trying to organize the marshmallows (the big ones go here, the mini ones go there, ...)for a marshmallow-and-toothpick building funshop at the Live and Learn conference in Peabody years ago.

He's the epitome of "quirky", which is exactly what I love about him. Rue's quirky too, in a more sweet and gentle way.;) Quirky is good in our world. And they really DO live exactly what she wrote in the book. Promise.
