Hmm let's see what's been in our mailbox lately - Time, National
Geographic, Life Learning, Reader's Digest, Sports Illustrated, Kid's
Discover, Kid's Geographic, Guideposts, Smithsonian, Scientific American
(I think that's it - something science-y like that), Home Handyman, Game
Informer, ummm I've probably missed some along the way there (I think
there's another gamer magazine in the mix) but that's a rough summary

The only things we actually get in the mail is Zoobooks, because it was very important that
Rachel get the stickers and collectors cards that come with it. For a year Josh got Game
Informer because it came free with the GameStop membership. However, most of our stuff
we read for free at the library or B&N, saving space and money ;-)

Dylan (ds) gets The Nation, National Geographic and Mother Jones. David
(dh) gets Wood and Fly Fisherman and I get Audubon. I've let some
subscriptions lapse lately.... It's getting hard to find new places to
stack stuff. <g>

i'm a magazine fanatic. i feel bad about it because i know it wastes paper
especially when so much of it is online nowadays, but...well, i don't have a
good excuse, i just like them. we get the nation, mother jones, mother
earth news, e - the environmental magazine, plenty, ode, midwifery today,
vegnews, mothering, the compleat mother, and free inquiry, and i'm
subscribing to life learning and live free learn free as soon as my husband
gets paid! yeah!

i'm also wanting to find a somewhat age-appropriate magazine for my son
(2). he loves my magazines and that's cool, but i'd like to get something
just for him that he can tear up all he likes. i'd like to get him
something pretty cool, maybe a little alternative, NOT like highlights (my
parents' suggestion). any suggestions?

We used to get Ladybug when my daughter was younger. I
liked it more than Highlights. Check out

It's not really "alternative," but both my kids have loved Babybug as
toddlers, and if you decide to, you can switch your subsciption to
any other magazine published by the Carus group at any time, which
we've used to try out Ladybug and Click! (which Eric is loving right
now).

Hmmm, we get Mother Earth News, National Geographic,
American Girl, Boy's Life, Time, and the Smithsonion.
We used to get the kids version of National Geographic
but they like the real one better. When they were
little (they're 14 and 11 now) we got Sesame Street,
Ranger Rick, and oh and some I can't even remember
their names anymore. I didn't buy Highlights but found
a huge collection at a yard sale and my kids loved
them.

Not really alternative, but at that age, my son loved Wild Animal Baby:

My son (age 5) has loved Ladybug for the last year, so we recently renewed his
subscription. We also put in a subscription for Click, by the same publisher, and just got
the first issue and he also liked that one.
