for those who read this on another list, sorry for the duplication,
it is late :0)

Someone replied to me offlist with what I now know is a win32 worm
virus, so i wanted to throw caution out there.....it is not a
registered member, and when I responded to see why they sent it, the
address was no good and came back undeliverable.....

DO NOT open any attachments from people you don't know, ESPECIALLY
attachments called HAMSTER.DOC.PIF

As I wrote to the other list this was posted to, the person you get the
virus from is not sending it intentionally. When you get these viruses,
they get sent on to anyone in your address book *and* anyone whose mail
you've saved, including list mail.

Don't open attachements from people you know either, unless you *know* they
meant to send it to you *and* you've scanned it with your virus
protection. And if you get an attachment with a double extension like the
one above, *.doc.pif, delete it immediately.

Hi All,
Just wanted to clarify, the *person* didn't send it, the virus sends itself.
Whenever you get a worm or virus, Please alert the sender, they may not ever
know they have it until someone lets them know..

Tia, can I ask a question since you know more about it than I do? If it was
an unintentional result of another virus victim, why would it come as a
direct result of a post I made. Why did it come "re: alwaylearning}
Philosophy"? And why is the address it came from no good? With your help and
reading at a website, i now understand how a worm works and can spawn off new
email from unsuspecting victims. But the fact that it did not match some
other telltale signs of this virus, no telltale subject line, no telltale
text inside, and from a bad address makes me think it was intentional. Any
thoughts? Thanks!

because the virus continues sending baby viruses out whenever the computer
it is living in has new mail.

The people who make these viruses are getting more sophisticated all the
time in their efforts to get people to open the attachments. One way to do
it is to make it look like it comes from a person you know. To do that, it
will grab subject lines, even little pieces of the message itself. I got
one like that a while back from one of my writing lists. I almost opened
it before I thought to wonder why the person would answer with an
attachment to me rather than a post to the list.
Your first line of defense is good virus protection, updated regularly. I
use PC-Cillin which offers a time-limited trial version. You can set it to
update automatically whenever you go online. Absolutely do that! Mine
checks every time I go online and finds a new virus definition file on
average every 2 or 3 days. That means there's a new virus or new version
of an old virus coming out that often. Any virus protection that will do
that is probably ok, though I've had enough problems with McAfee that I
wouldn't recommend it.
Your next line of defense is to be extremely skeptical of attachments. My
cousins sent me a fancy Christmas card last year that was actually a
program (with a .exe extension). They were a little miffed when I wrote
back to ask if they really sent it, but I just can't afford to get a virus.

Sometimes that's hard, as the return address won't work. At least one of
them inserts an underline at the beginning of the address. If you remove
it, the addy should work. If they were doing that with mine, it would look
like _leschke@... instead of the correct leschke@....

I didn't get any myself, but someone on the list sent me one. I've written
to the person and asked for them to clean off their computer and then I'll
reinstate the address to the list.

So until I know that it's been cleaned off, maybe having Always Learning mail
no longer going to that address will help.

yes the address it came from did that! I noticed it as i was searching the
member directories and trying to determine why wasn't it the first on the
list alphabetically. Thanks again for a wealth of information!
