mainstream advice

Someone sent me a nice note about the value of Always Learning in his life. There was a link to a recent discussion on a facebook group (not mine) about limiting screentime
Of several very grating bits of "wisdom" there, this jumped out:
-=-My grandmother told me that with boys, you have to run them like dogs and boy was she right! -=-
To do ANYthing to one's own child "like a dog" sounds shockingly negative.
And it has my favorite "have to."
I had boys, and I didn't "have to" do anything, but I chose to do thousands of things I do NOT regret. I never once ran them like dogs. I did, many times, take them to a playground after dinner so they could play until they were tired. I never made one turn off a game to go out and play, but they chose, many times, to go out and play.
People who feel they "have to" do anything, especially when it's negative, are trapped in a negative place.
Sometimes it's nice (just for a little bit) to peek in at mainstream advice to see how far we've come.
