We have a small cabin out in a remote area of the Sierras. One year we
walked in and there was a dark, foot wide strip going all the way across
the floor of the cabin. Since our eyes had not yet adjusted to the dark,
we couldn't figure out what it was. Then we realized they were big black
ants. For two days we kept sweeping them out the door, but they
continued to flow like a river in a hole in the back of the cabin and
out the space under the front door. Finally we stopped trying. We would
just sit at the dinner table and watch them go. After the fourth day,
they just stopped. We never did find out where they came from or where
they were going.

Sounds like they were travelers, just passing through.... Kinda reminds me of the Oregon Trail... maybe that's what the Indians thought of us?

I saw something similar a couple of years ago. There was a trail of ants
going from one yard to another two doors down. I think some were carrying
eggs. So maybe they were moving to a new home.

A natural history of mosquitoes.

The maps are slightly behind with the spread of West
